West Bengal: EC Transfers Murshidabad's DIG 'Over Violent Incidents'

The Election Commission (EC) on Monday transferred DIG (Murshidabad Range) Mukesh to a non-election-related position with immediate effect. However, the EC did not cite any specific reason for this action.

A notification issued by the Commission instructed the West Bengal government to propose three potential replacements for Mukesh by 5 pm on Monday. The Commission will then select one individual from the list of suggestions.

What Do ECI Sources Say?

However, as per ECI Sources, The Commission has opted to dismiss the DIG Murshidabad (equivalent to the rank of IG) following two instances of violent outbreaks in the region involving the use of weapons and explosives. The decision stems from inadequate oversight in promptly preventing subsequent incidents. Notably, during its visit to the State, the Commission explicitly stated a policy of zero tolerance towards election-related violence, affirming its commitment to hold higher authorities accountable for any lapses.

In response to the EC’s decision, West Bengal CM Mamata Banerjee expressed her concerns, suggesting that the poll body should bear the responsibility for any potential riots in the area. “Even today, just based on the BJP’s instructions, the DIG of Murshidabad was changed. Now, if there are riots in Murshidabad and Malda, the responsibility will lie with the EC… deliberately officers are changed… to trigger violence. If there is even one riot, the EC will be responsible as they are looking after law and order here,” said Banerjee, Indian Express reported.

“If I can fast for farmers for 26 days, I can go on a hunger strike for 55 days outside your office as well. I know how to fight. I am not a coward. Remember this!” she added.

Since the announcement of the Lok Sabha polls schedule, the EC has also removed West Bengal Director General of Police (DGP) Rajeev Kumar, along with four ‘non-cadre’ district magistrates (DMs): Bidhan Chandra Roy from Purba Bardhaman, Tanvir Afzal from Purba Medinipur, Purnendu Kumar from Birbhum, and Sunil Agarwala from Jhargram. Additionally, the poll body has relieved two senior officers, Additional Chief Electoral Officer Amit Roy Chowdhury and Joint Chief Electoral Officer Rahul Nath, from their poll management duties in West Bengal.

Voting for the 42 Lok Sabha seats in West Bengal is scheduled to occur in seven phases from April 19 to June 1.
