'Twisters' Trailer Drops At Super Bowl; Here’s Everything We Know About The Sequel

The trailer for the highly anticipated “Twisters” movie dropped during the Super Bowl on Sunday. Directed by Lee Isaac Chung, who directed the Oscar-nominated film “Minari,” and starring Glen Powell, Daisy Edgar Jones and Anthony Ramos, the movie is loosely based on the 1996 classic, “Twister.”

Everything we know so far:

The script was written by Mark L. Smith, who also wrote the screenplay for “The Revenant.” It’s based on characters created by the original “Twister” screenwriters, but they don’t have any relation to Bill Paxton’s Bill Harding and Helen Hunt’s Dr. Jo Harding.

According to ScreenRant, the sequel will be a standalone film. Moviegoers don’t need to watch the first movie to understand “Twisters,” and the plot will not have anything to do with the original. The movie cost about $200 million to make and will be packed full of CGI tornadoes and action sequences – flying cows may or may not be included.

As far as the meteorology, the trailer looks to be an action-packed, if not largely exaggerated, look at the world of storm chasing. Daisy Edgar-Jones (“Normal People,” “Where The Crawdads Sing”), plays Kate Cooper, “a former storm chaser haunted by a devastating encounter with a tornado during her college years.”

According to the official synopsis, Cooper is convinced to get back into the field to test a new storm-tracking system by her friend Javi, played by Anthony Ramos (“In The Heights”). When the pair cross paths with notorious and reckless chaser Tyler Owens (played by Glen Powell, of “Top Gun: Maverick” fame), the group “find themselves squarely in the paths of multiple storm systems converging over central Oklahoma in the fight of their lives.”

“Twisters” will be out in movie theaters everywhere on July 19, 2024.

What Our Meteorologists Say:

Kait Parker: “I really hope this movie shows the dangers of storm chasing and why it should be left to professionals. Expert storm chasers who have been doing it for decades have been killed by tornadoes; the last thing we need is non-professionals hitting the road during storms. An increase in amateur storm chasers in recent years has increased risk for everyone as small back roads become clogged with chaser traffic and trap people without a means of safe escape from approaching tornadoes.”

Ari Sarsalari: “Three words right off the bat: take my money. I’m really impressed with how much closer to reality the CGI appears than in the original movie. I’m excited to see the storm chaser drama storyline since that’s become more of a common thing in modern times. I can’t wait to take my daughters to see this on the big screen – it’s going to be a special moment for me since the original Twister was such a big part of my childhood.”
