Millennial mother reveals the popular names that are now considered 'OLD people' monikers by Gen Alpha - so, is YOURS one of them?

  • Amber Cimiotti discovered what Gen Alpha thinks of as ‘old people’ names
  • Her elementary school-aged daughter pointed to names like Ashley and Amanda
  • Many of the ‘old people’ names were ones that peaked in 1980s and 1990s

A woman has revealed what elementary school kids consider ‘old people’ names – and many of them will sound uncomfortably familiar to the millennial bracket.

Amber Cimiotti, 37, from Los Angeles, discovered from her young daughter that common millennial names are now associated with ‘old people’ – among them, Ashley, Amanda, and, Amber admitted, her own name, too.

‘I never thought about it this way,’ the mom-of-two confessed.

‘But she’s like, “Yeah, my teachers’ names are like, Miss Erica, Miss Samantha.” There’s Amandas and Ashleys. And she’s like, “Those are just old people names,”‘ Amber recounted in shock over what her daughter related to her.

According to Amber’s daughter, ‘young’ people names apparently included her own name, Scarlett, as well as Charlotte, Olivia and Penelope

  • Amanda
  • Ashley

Meanwhile, ‘young’ people names apparently included Scarlett – the name of Amber’s daughter – Charlotte, Olivia and Penelope as well as Isabella, Bella and Ella.

‘For me, Ashley is always going to be my friend from elementary. So it seems like a kid name, but it’s not,’ the mom said.

‘All of these names are like basically the new Margaret or Barbara,’ she concluded of the uncomfortable revelation.

Of the more than 2.6 million people who’d viewed the video, thousands took to the comments to discuss this new-found information.

‘They have no clue that they have the old people names,’ one pointed out.

‘Little do they know that the “new names” are actually grandma names to us lol,’ a second agreed.

‘And little do they know we just repurposed old people names lol,’ another millennial-age mom echoed.

‘Ashley is a kid name for sure!!’ one viewer – named Ashley – commented. ‘Grandma Ashley is crazy to me lol.’

Many pointed out that millennial-aged parents actually ‘repurposed’ the ‘old people’ names in their own worldview – while others confirmed the observations were widespread for Gen Alpha

Another TikToker, called Amanda, joked that the younger generations are taking too many things away from her, writing: ‘Um ow. First skinny jeans, then the side part and now my NAME?!’

Indeed, the name Charlotte was among 100 most popular baby names in the US for much of the first half of the 20th century, peaking in 1944, according to Very Well Family.

Meanwhile, Penelope was among the top 500 more popular baby names in the US from the late 1930s through the late 1950s, before totally falling off the radar.

But the name soared back into fashion beginning in 2012, when Kourtney Kardashian and Scott Disick welcomed daughter Penelope – and every year since 2013, it has been in the top 100 most-picked baby names nationally.

Meanwhile, the recent surge of popularity for names like Isabella and Bella can likely be chalked up to the name of the protagonist from the mega-popular Twilight young adult fantasy series, with the first book in the saga coming out in 2005, and the first movie dropping three years later.

Isabella was also in the top 300 to 500 most popular names for girls born in the late 19th century up through to the early 1920s.

The name Scarlett only began gaining in popularity in the 21st century, however, Olivia was a relatively uncommon name up until the 1990s, all according to data compiled by Baby Center.

As for so-called ‘old people’ names, Ashley peaked as the top baby name in the nation in 1991 and 1992, and slowly declined in popularity until a steep drop-off in the early 2020s saw it fall back to lower than the 700th-ranked name.

Meanwhile, the name Amber peaked in popularity in the mid-1980s; the name Amanda took off in the late 1970s and remained among the top 10 most popular girls’ names through to 1995.

And other commenters seemed to confirm the observations as to ‘old people’ names are widespread among Gen Alpha.

As one wrote, ‘My daughter told me a kid in her class has a dad name. Kid’s name is Josh.’
