Renault Zoe scores poorly in NCAP’s European safety test

The electric Renault Zoe scores poorly when it comes to safety. At least that is the conclusion of the test of the Euro New Car Assessment Program (NCAP). According to the NCAP, the car is allowed on the road because it meets the standards, but lacks essential modern safety technology.

The NCAP has created a five-star safety rating system it claims to help consumers and businesses compare vehicles in an easier way. This makes it easier to see what the safest choice is. The ratings are not binding, as it does not certify vehicles for road use. But European consumers do pay attention to the results of the tests. Car manufacturers are also actively displaying good ratings when promoting vehicles.

The Zoe got zero stars. It was the third time that a car received a zero score. This could hurt sales of the model, potentially forcing Renault to make adjustments. The NCAP criticized, among other things, the side airbag, which is said to be worse than in previous models.

Renault assured in a response that the Zoe is a safe vehicle, meeting all legal safety standards. Furthermore, Renault says it is constantly making efforts to comply with the increasingly strict rules. The automaker did not address the airbag issue.

Until September, the Renault Zoe was the third best-selling electric car in Europe behind the Tesla Model 3 and the Volkswagen ID.3. The Dacia Spring also did not come out too well with 1 star. The Dacia Logan and Sandero achieved two stars. Dacia is part of Renault. According to the NCAP, the poor score of Renault and Dacia shows that the manufacturer seems to be focusing less on safety in the transition to electric driving.

A number of other vehicles received five stars, including BMW’s electric iX, Daimler’s electric Mercedes-Benz EQS, Nissan’s Qashqai and Volkswagen’s VW Caddy.
