Regional conference on women's role in development opens

Amman, March 18 (Petra) — A regional conference, entitled “Women , a Player in Stability and Comprehensive Development” in Jordanian and Middle Eastern societies, kicked off Saturday morning.

The conference is organized by the Senate’s Women’s Committee in cooperation with the Sociological Arab Association and the German Organization for International cooperation.

The conference, which was patronized by Senate President Faisal Fayez, is part of a project to enhance the political and economic participation of women in the Middle East and North Africa.

In opening remarks, head of the Senate Women’s Committee Maysoon Atoum stressed the key and effective role of women in social stability and development, and the need for their participation in all walks of life and integration into the political and economic community, noting His Majesty King Abdullah’s keen interest in women’s empowerment, which was underscored by the Royal Committee to Modernize the Political System and the economy.

She noted that Jordanian women have made many achievements and successes at the local, Arab and international levels, stressing that women have the potential and capacity to advance in many sectors and the tools to take leadership roles.

Atoum called for “a mature” approach to address women’s rights in order to reach a society where everyone participates to achieve real development.

Other speakers at the gathering also highlighted the key of women and the need to have a robust role in society, development and decision-making as well as incorporating women’s issues into public policies and national programs and priorities.
