regeringsparti vælger partiveteran som ny leder i skotland

John Swinney er mandag valgt som ny leder af Det Skotske Nationalparti (SNP).

Skotland får ny regeringschef, efter at medlemmer af Det Skotske Nationalparti (SNP) har valgt John Swinney som ny leder.

Swinney efterfølger dermed partifællen Humza Yousaf som Skotlands førsteminister. Swinney har været medlem af partiet siden 1979.

– Jeg er dybt beæret over at være blevet valgt som leder af SNP. Jeg vil give alt, hvad jeg har, for at tjene mit parti og mit land, skriver Swinney på det sociale medie X.

Humza Yousef sad på posten som førsteminister i lidt mere end et år. Han gik af i slutningen af april.

Det skete, efter at et samarbejde mellem nationalisterne i Yousafs parti og partiet Scottish Greens blev afsluttet på grund af uenighed om klimapolitikken.

I forbindelse med sin afgang gav Yousaf udtryk for, at han havde håbet, at han og SNP, som har 63 af de 129 pladser i Skotlands folkevalgte forsamling, kunne fortsætte som en mindretalsregering.

Den skotske leder troede, at han kunne arbejde med Scottish Greens på en mere uformel måde end gennem et formelt regeringssamarbejde.

Men tilliden var der ikke længere hos Scottish Greens.

Efter Yousafs afgang blev der åbnet for et potentielt kampvalg. Der blev dog ikke meget for partimedlemmerne at vælge imellem.

Således endte John Swinney med at være den eneste kandidat til posten som partileder i Det Skotske Nationalparti.

Der var ellers spekulationer i Skotland om, at tidligere finansminister Kate Forbes ville stille op, skriver Reuters. Men hun afviste torsdag, at hun var kandidat til lederposten.

Også Graeme McCormick blev nævnt som et bud på en ny partileder, men heller ikke han ønskede at udfordre John Swinney.

Deadline for at melde sit kandidatur var mandag ved middagstid.

John Swinney, der er 60 år, har siddet i det skotske parlament siden 1999.
