Cost of second-hand electric cars drop, but are they worth it?

It’s high voltage but no longer high-priced. The cost of electric cars are in fact tumbling. You’re buying something that is far better value. New research shows the average car loses 14% of its value in the first two years, but the average used electric car plunges by 42%. For example, this three-year old petrol Hyundai is selling for around $6000 less than last year’s model. But the electric version is selling for $25,000 less than last year’s. So does that make older EVs A bargain? Look, yes and no. You’re you’re buying a car that was already a little bit more expensive than than where the equivalent petrol or diesel car was. And of course the main expense of that car is the battery. The advice is to seek a battery test through an authorised dealer for private sellers and buyers. It’s just not that easy at the moment to try and find someone who will do that battery health test. And while the upfront cost might be starting to feel cheap and there’s no expensive petrol to buy. Electric car owners do tend to find hidden costs along the way. Insurance is something that is becoming a real touch point for electric car buyers, with certain insurers not wanting to cover them due to the complexity and cost of repairs. Part of the problem has been a lack of industry experience. Retraining is now a priority that should stabilize prices and help ensure safety. You’ve got anything from 400 to 1000 volts, so the training is important for every person within the automotive industry to understand how to approach that car and how to make it safe. But in the meantime? It just might be less charge for more value. Chris Kohler, 9 News.
