Reece James has spoken out after surgery to fix a recurring hamstring problem, saying he has received a lot of ‘hate and negativity’ since his latest injury problem.

The 24-year-old is facing up to four months out of action for Chelsea due to the operation and his chances of making it to the European Championships with England in the summer have taken a serious blow.

The right-back pulled up during Chelsea’s defeat to Everton at Goodison Park earlier this month with a recurrence of a previous hamstring strain.

The club have sought a second opinion on James’ injury after initial scans were inconclusive as to the best route forward and an operation was believed to be required.

James now has to deal with a long spell on the sidelines, but he also reveals he has to deal with a lot of abuse online as well, but has thanked those who have been positive and supported him during a difficult time.

The Blues skipper wrote on Instagram on Thursday evening: ‘The footballing world knew I got injured but the procedure I would go down this time took slightly longer to figure out the best solution.

‘I had surgery today to try fix my reoccurring [sic] hamstring issue, the recovery has started, both physically and mentally.

‘Since this injury I’ve had a good amount of support but significantly more hate and negativity. Believe me I don’t wanna be injured, I’m happiest when I’m playing football. Thanks to the understanding people that support me despite the highs or the lows, it goes a long way. Stay well, Reece.’

James is on a long list of Chelsea stars sidelined through injury, alongside Wesley Fofana, Marc Cucurella, Robert Sanchez, Ben Chilwell, Romeo Lavia, Trevoh Chalobah, Lesley Ugochukwu and Carney Chukwuemeka.

Enzo Fernandez and Levi Colwill are doubts for the trip to Wolves on Christmas Eve, but could still make it.
