180,000 protesters march against antisemitism in France
NEW DELHI: In response to the sharp rise in antisemitic acts since the start of the Israel-Hamas war, tens of thousands of people across France took to the streets on Sunday, reports CNN.
In Paris, an estimated 105,000 demonstrators participated, marking the largest mobilization against antisemitism since the 1990 protest against the desecration of the Jewish cemetery in Carpentras, according to CNN affiliate BFM TV.
Political figures, including Prime Minister Elisabeth Borne and former presidents Francois Hollande and Nicolas Sarkozy, joined the protesters in Paris. Together, they held a banner with the words, “For the Republic, against antisemitism.”
Smaller demonstrations occurred in cities such as Nice, Lyon, and Marseille, with over 182,000 people participating in marches nationwide, as reported by BFM TV, citing the interior ministry. The Israel-Hamas war has heightened tensions in France, especially in the capital, leading to an increase in antisemitic incidents, according to French President Emmanuel Macron.
Macron informed that within a single month, over 1,000 antisemitic acts were reported in France, marking a threefold increase compared to the total incidents recorded in the entire preceding year.
Macron said, “A France where French people are afraid because of their religion or their origin is not France. No tolerance for the intolerable.”
Macron reaffirmed France’s solidarity with Israel, responding to criticism from notable figures in Israel regarding remarks he had made in a previous interview with the BBC.
Additionally Macron said, “We share the pain and we do share a willingness to get rid of terrorism. We know what terrorism means in France. But I think there is no justification to attack civilians.”
