‘Reckless' decisions being made at National Trust homes

National Trust rebels have warned that “reckless decisions” have led to a “catastrophic decline” in the presentation of properties, claiming that expert curators are being undermined in order to prioritise profit.

As the charity gears up for next weekend’s AGM in Harrogate, it is preparing for some of the most lively and heated debates in its history, as newly organised groups of insurgents go head-to-head with the leadership on issues from trail hunting to the alleged dumbing down of its heritage, all amid a growing backlash over its “woke” policies.

Restore Trust is leading the charge on what it claims is the “relentless diminution of standards”.

Formed in April, the campaign group has accused the charity of patronising and lecturing visitors, underestimating its members who “understand that history is complicated”.

Restore Trust has tabled three resolutions for the AGM, covering the treatment of “demoralised” volunteers, the perceived lack of transparency about senior managers’ pay and what it describes as the rejection of curatorial expertise.

It is the latter issue that has proved the most divisive, with supporters preparing for clashes after the charity advised members to vote against the resolution.

Writing on a blind at Hughenden Manor

The group accuses the National Trust of operating as a “commercial tourist organisation”, reducing the role of curators to mere advisers with no authority to make decisions.

Instead, it asserts that managers based at individual properties – who have no curatorial experience – are free to ignore expert advice in order to “maximise profitability” and “develop and grow a successful business”.

As a result, it suggests that “highly damaging and ignorant” decisions are being made.

“Targets are set for ever-increasing visitor numbers, which put at risk the very thing that visitors have come to enjoy,” the group claims.

“There has been a catastrophic decline in the quality of the presentation of houses: bean bags, historic furniture making way for playrooms, a decorative scheme over-painted for a film production, even text on window blinds.

“Ever-more intrusive car parks have appeared to accommodate ever-larger numbers of visitors.

“Playgrounds proliferate in wholly unsuitable spaces, ice-cream vans stand in the middle of historic settings, and there is a profusion of incongruous advertising boards and banners.”

Restore Trust, which has several hundred supporters, says many expert curators have recently been made redundant, while those remaining have been “seriously undermined” in their work.

By way of example, it says presentation has been trivialised with “nonsensical” rearrangements of the collections and intrusive additions, such as the “pretentious” installations at Croome Court, Worcestershire, and “gimmicky and patronising” signage in the gardens at Glendurgan, Cornwall and Biddulph Grange, Staffordshire.

‘Glorious’ dining room despoiled

At Stourhead, Wiltshire, a new visitor experience – which includes a large white cube covered in random objects – ruins the experience for the visitor, according to Restore Trust, while at Attingham Park, Shropshire, the “glorious” dining room has been “despoiled” by pizza boxes, fizzy drinks cans, sweet packets and a glitter ball for a party-time theme.

In response, the National Trust insists that the number of curators has in fact doubled over the last five years and that such roles were prioritised when redundancies were made last year as a result of the pandemic.

“Expert curators are central to all decision-making about houses, collections, gardens and landscapes, and are committed to underpinning those decisions with research,” it says.

“We are ambitious for the future of the houses and collections in our care. They have changed throughout their history and will continue to evolve. New research will lead to additional layers of interpretation; curators will continue to ensure that we tell the rich history of each place as fully as possible.”

A National Trust spokesperson said: “Our houses, collections and gardens are as important to us as they have always been. Each year, on average, about 75 per cent of our conservation budget is spent on houses, collections and gardens, with the remainder (25 per cent) going towards coast and countryside.”
