East Stroudsburg School Board ApprovesTeacher Contract

The Carl T. Secor Board Room was packed Monday night as the East Stroudsburg Area School Board kicked off their meeting.

Many items, including the motion to approve a professional staff contract, filled the agenda.

“It will have significant raises and nice changes to our healthcare. This is something that is something we have genuinely been looking for and lobbying for in this district,” says Paul Kernan.

Paul Kernan is the President of the East Stroudsburg Education Association and says the contract will help retain and recruit teachers.

“This will allow for us to keep our best and brightest for years to come. It is also going to allow administration and this district to recruit the best and brightest young teachers possible,” Kernan explained.

According to the contract, starting wages for first-year teachers would increase by $10,000, with existing teachers receiving raises as well.

As the board began to vote, Superintendent of Schools, William Riker, advised the board to remember that revenue must be increased to maintain all approved contracts.

“I think it is important for the community and everyone to understand that it is a two-pronged process,” the Superintendent said.

The Superintendent estimates the new contract would cost the district around $10 million in the first year. Many members of the board disagree.

“Some of your numbers are a little bit different than what we learned and what we went by,” says board member Keith Karkut.

The current contract for teachers ends before the beginning of the next school year. Kernan says the contract is always being created with one group in mind.

“We may not always agree, but we always agree we are here for one thing, the best for the students of the East Stroudsburg Area School District,” Kernan said.

Following deliberations, the board unanimously passed the contract.

In addition to the contract, the district hired sixty new teachers for the current academic year.
