Ratings: Griezmann red card halts Atlético comeback vs. Liverpool

Jan Oblak

Couldn’t do much for either goal, looked secure under crosses and made a nice save from Trent Alexander-Arnold and again from Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain — 6.

Kieran Trippier

Linked well with Rodrigo De Paul even if he wasn’t as far forward as usual. An abrasive performance from the right-back, and even more so when Griezmann was sent off — 6.

Felipe

Solid at the back in what was a crazy game. Liverpool seemed to target the left-hand side most of the game and that left Felipe relatively safe from too much work, but he did everything he was asked to do well — 7.

Geoffrey Kondogbia

Asked to play at centre-back in Stefan Savić’s absence. Handled himself well even if it took a couple goals before Atlético Madrid settled in. Hooked at half-time despite having improved as the game went on, as Diego Simeone saw something he didn’t like — 6.

Mario Hermoso

A little stretched in the first half as he was left trying to cover for Carrasco (who was struggling against Mohamed Salah) and Kondogbia (who is not a natural central defender). Breathed a sigh of relief when Giménez came on at the break and he could focus on his role at left centre-back, which gave Carrasco a platform to attack. Looked to have injured himself and was waiting to be subbed off, but he made a clumsy, silly tackle on Diogo Jota to give away a penalty before Simeone got the chance. Llorente eventually replaced him — 3.

Thomas Lemar

Played a key role for the first goal. Showed off his agility a number of times in the first half as he skipped past would-be tacklers. Liverpool couldn’t catch him, and he was linking play excellently in the first half. But he was another player who suffered for after Griezmann was sent off in the second half — 8.

Rodrigo De Paul

Played in the all-action role Simeone wanted him to play when he pushed for the Argentine’s signing in the summer. Played a very direct style, which suits Griezmann and Félix when Atlético play on the break. Renan Lodi replaced him after 80 minutes — 7.

Koke

Struggled to get to grips with Liverpool in the early going. Salah skipped by him for the eighth-minute opener and he was in no-man’s land for the second as Naby Keïta smacked it home with 13 minutes gone. One of Koke’s quieter games, as the match was played at such a pace that he never got a chance to stamp his authority — 5.

Yannick Carrasco

Looked lost at the start but improved as Atlético went on the attack. His creativity was not as needed with Félix and Lemar on the left giving Liverpool headaches. Allowed to roam further forward in the second half with Hermoso covering for him, but that plan was stifled after Griezmann’s ejection — 7.

Antoine Griezmann

Slightly lucky with the first goal as he directed a 20th-minute Koke shot into the net. Nothing lucky about his second as he controlled the pass inside and slammed home on 34 minutes. Had another couple of chances and looks the perfect complement to Félix in attack. Sent off after 52 minutes for a high foot on Roberto Firmino — 7.

João Félix

Atlético fans have seen false dawns in the past, but with the ankle problems that dogged him last season behind him, the Portuguese has been showing what he offers at his best. Didn’t have a chance to express himself in the second half with Atlético reduced to 10 men for most of it. Correa replaced him after 80 minutes — 7.

Substitutes

José María Giménez

Introduced at the break for Kondogbia. Looked like he had a penalty when Jota brought him down in the penalty area late on. The referee gave the penalty and then overturned his decision — 7.

Renan Lodi

Not on long enough to make an impact at left-back as Atlético chased the game.

Angel Correa

Had a good chance after a nice team move, but not on long enough to make a proper impact.

Marcos Llorente

Loads of energy on the right when he came on, but not enough time for him to affect the scoreline.

Luis Suárez

Set up Correa for a good chance in extra-time but the Argentine blazed over. Booked for dissent and was lucky not to be sent off as he kept going after being shown the yellow.
