Ram Charan-Jr NTR's 'RRR' To Rajinikanth's '2.0': 5 Most Expensive South Films Ever Produced

In the last few months, films like Pushpa: The Rise, RRR, and KGF: Chapter 2 created havoc at the box office. The craze of South films affected the business of Bollywood films. However, it is heartening that regional films are finally getting due recognition and appreciation. 

Seeing the popularity and craze for South films, even producers are putting their money at stake for the sake of making good cinema. The recent reports suggest that Allu Arju and Rashmika Mandanna-starrer Pushpa 2 will be made on a whopping budget of Rs 400 crore.

In the past too, various South films were made on insane budgets. From Rajinikanth and Akshay Kumar’s 2.0 to Prabhas’ much-awaited project Adipurush, let’s take a look at the list of most expensive South films:

2.0 

Released in 2018, 2.0 is the standalone sequel to Rajinikanth’s Enthiran (Robot in Hindi) which starred Akshay Kumar as the main antagonist and Amy Jackson as the leading lady, alongside Thalaiva. Reportedly, it is among the most expensive films to date and was made on a budget of over Rs 500 crore. The movie was high on VFX and received a great response upon its release. 2.0 was a VFX-heavy project which was also released in 3D. Besides Tamil, the sci-fi film was also dubbed in Hindi and Telugu. It fared well at the box office and broke several records.

Adipurush

Featuring Prabhas, Kriti Sanon, Saif Ali Khan, and Sunny Singh, Om Raut’s Adipurush is among the most-hyped films and is being shot simultaneously in Telugu and Hindi. Based on the epic Ramayana, it is rumoured to be made on a budget of Rs 500 crore. After facing delays amid the COVID-19 pandemic, Adipurus is now slated to release in January 2023.

Ponniyin Selvan

Ponniyin Selvan, directed by Mani Ratnam and starring Aishwarya Rai Bachchan and Chiyaan Vikram, will be released on September 30, 2022. The film, which will be released in two parts, is expected to cost Rs. 500 crore.

RRR

Featuring Ram Charan and Jr NTR in the lead roles, SS Rajamouli’s RRR was released in March this year and turned out to be a huge hit at the ticket window. The makers spent an insane amount of Rs 400 crore on the film’s making. For the unversed, RRR is a fictional tale about two revolutionaries, Komaram Bheem (Rama Rao) and Alluri Sitarama Raju (Charan) and their fight against the British Raj.  

Saaho 

After the success of the Baahubali series, Saaho marked Prabhas’ return to the cinema halls after a gap of 2 years. Featuring Shraddha Kapoor as the female lead, the film was shot simultaneously in Tamil, Telugu, and Hindi languages and was dubbed into Malayalam. It is said to be made on a budget of Rs 350 crore.
