Martin Lewis says anyone with these health conditions can get £5,300 handout - with bonus for terminal illness

Money saving expert Martin Lewis is urging people to claim a little known DWP handout that can give you between £3,000 and £5,300 a year.

Speaking on the latest February 20 episode of his consumer advice programme The Martin Lewis Money Show Live on ITV1 and streamed on ITVX, Martin urged his army of financially savvy fans to spread the word about Attendance Allowance.

The cash is a handout given to people with certain health conditions to help ease their burden but there are about 1.1M people who are eligible for the money who aren’t currently claiming it.

There are several common ailments that can qualify you for the money, and it’s targeted at those who currently require help with daily tasks even in an unofficial capacity.

Martin Lewis said: “Just to give you the scale of this, the lower rate is £68 a week, £3,540 a year, and that is somebody who needs help during the day or the night.

“If you need help during the day AND the night, you get the higher rate of £102 a week or £5,300 a year. Also is worth saying, sadly to say, if you’ve got less than a year to live you also get the higher rate.”

Martin added: “You must have needed help or supervision for six consecutive months. Now help means help with daily living.”

Martin said that this could include dressing, getting in and out of bed, going to the toilet and other such daily routine activities except cooking or shopping and it is for disabled or ill state pensioners.

He said that people with conditions such as Parkinson’s, dementia or a terminal illness are likely to qualify, adding: “I really need you to spread the word about this for the people who aren’t claiming.

To claim, you need to apply with your National Insurance number and hospital records and call for the form and get paid from the date you asked for the form from the DWP.

There is also an Age UK helpline that can help people fill out the form too, Martin added, and some will need to attend an assessment.
