Rail union boss Mick Lynch meets Young Offender Billy Murphy at Cork City game

rail union boss mick lynch meets young offender billy murphy at cork city game

Mick Lynch at Turner’s Cross with actor Shane Casey

General secretary of the National Union of Rail, Maritime and Transport Workers (RMT), Mick Lynch became a household name after taking part in heated TV debates during strikes over pay, jobs and working conditions which led to just 20% of trains running.

The trade unionist has taken on broadcasters, Piers Morgan, Kay Burley and many others, refusing to shy away from an argument and putting objectors to the strikes comfortably in their place with straight-forward, and quick witted answers.

Taking time out of his busy schedule eating TV presenters for breakfast, Mick is currently holidaying in the Rebel county, attending the Cork City FC match in Turner’s Cross, who he is a large supporter of. Mick was born in the UK to two Irish parents, with his father, Jackie Lynch, hailing from Cork city.

While staying Leeside, Mick met with SIPTU general secretary, Joe Cunningham, who today gave a donation on behalf of his members to the trade union leader, presenting him with a cheque for for €20,000.

The general secretary congratulated Mick for the way he has fought for the demands of his members during their ongoing dispute and representing working people in Britain as they deal with the ongoing cost of living crisis.

The RMT have called four national strike days since 21st June and two more are planned for later this month – so prepare for some more witty shut downs and stunned faces as those brave enough try to keep up with the trade union leader.

And unfortunately for Lynch, his beloved Cork City were beaten 2-0 on the night by their Munster rivals Treaty United but at least he got to meet Billy Murphy anyway.
