Quiccs Is the First Official Filipino Creator with Adidas Originals

We’ve seen the overwhelming resurgence of the Adidas Forum in 2021 with the brand’s classic sneaker from the ‘80s seeing reincarnations in a multitude of iterations and colorways. With all the previous releases to choose from, probably none is as exciting for local fans as this one right here. Filipino toy designer and visual artist Juanito Maiquez—more famously known as Quiccs—once again comes together with the three stripes on a very special collaboration.

Earlier this year, Maiquez and Adidas released the “Manila Heritage” Harden Vol. 5, a Philippine flag-inspired take on the James Harden’s signature show dripping with details and elements uniquely Quiccs. His co-creation even found its way on-feet of the Brooklyn Nets star and made an appearance on the hardcourt during their NBA Playoffs campaign last season.

Quiccs for Adidas Originals

This time around, Quiccs is given the opportunity to work on the iconic Adidas Originals silhouette. The co-branded Forum is a culmination of Quiccs’ journey from just being a fan of the brand back in the day to earning his stripes and becoming the first official Filipino creator with Adidas Originals.

Quiccs and Adidas go way back, years before he was even on the company’s radar.

“I’ve been sporting the Superstars since college and I’ve been giving tribute to the brand (with the) Superstar silhouette,” the artist shared with Esquire Philippines when we sat down with him for an interview back in June. “I’ve been promoting the brand since 2012 with my very first toy, the TEQ63.” True enough, the shelltoes are pretty much his vinyl toy’s kicks of choice.

“It represents who I am with its ties to the hip hop scene,” he explained. When we asked him what other sneaker would he love to be able to work on if given the opportunity, we should have picked up on a clue he dropped four months ago.

“I’m also a big fan of the Adidas Forum,” he said. “It’s a very popular silhouette from back in the ‘80s. “I love it because of how classic it is. It’s a very beautiful shoe.”

It has always been a dream of Quiccs’ to one day remix the old-school stuff in the Adidas Originals archive. Dreams do come true and what better shoe to work with than this year’s runaway favorite. With the Forum 84 Low OG “Blue Thread” and “Pine Green” colorways as his muses, Quiccs drizzles his own colorway with details and distinct nods to his own brand as an artist.

Three stripes in striking red represent the passion he shares with the global sportswear giant. His signature character, TEQ63 takes centerstage on the reflective 3M upper and as a logo found on the gold metal deubre and on the back heel. The Quiccs Forum’s straps also come in three interchangeable designs that lets wearers go crazy experimenting with self-expression and exploring with style.

My favorite cameos on the sneaker are found on the tongue with a couple of personal messages the artist leaves behind for us to decipher. The date “01.21.20” represents when he first began working with Adidas while Christopher Wallace’s immortal line—”It was all a dream”—sums up everything Quiccs feels about his ongoing venture with the brand.

Earning his stripes

“Since the beginning of this partnership, I have said how I would like to be able to show and inspire other people that through passion, patience and hard work, one can build their dreams into a reality,” he shares. “Earning my stripes was an opportunity I only used to dream of, and now I am living it, and I am honored to share with my fellow Filipinos and the rest of the world an iconic Adidas Originals silhouette featuring a design that was a product of my passion and creativity.”

“We saw how much Filipinos and consumers all over the world from Singapore, Hong Kong, and especially the U.S., looked forward to seeing and owning Quiccs’ work through the Quiccs Manila Tees and the Harden Vol. 5 ‘Manila Heritage’ and so it was no question that we wanted him to have his own take and colorway for the very first Adidas Originals designed by a Filipino,” says Adidas Philippines manager of brand communications and sports marketing JD Cortez. “We hope that the Quiccs Forum is able to inspire the new generation to keep pursuing their passions until they, too, earn their stripes.”

The Quiccs-designed Adidas Forum, which retails for P6,500, will release on adidas.com.ph, the Adidas app, and Adidas stores in select countries on October 15.
