Queensland records zero cases of COVID-19 as CHO wants 50,000 vaccinations a day

Queensland has recorded no new cases of coronavirus overnight.

Authorities announced 72.07 per cent of eligible Queenslanders have had their first dose of a COVID-19 vaccine, while 56 per cent are fully vaccinated.

Deputy Premier Steven Miles said Queensland “will stick to the national plan” when it came to moving forward.

“As soon as we reach those 70 and 80 per cent targets, well then the need for restrictions will get less,” he said.

“I guess the difference is we’re not in lockdown here, where as in New South Wales they have had the motivation of lifting the lockdown [to get vaccinated] — we’re not currently in lockdown.

“So the motivation, the incentive is, to avoid lockdown and of course when we reach suitable thresholds we’ll also be able to lift other restrictions.”

He said the government could not set a target for reopening borders.

“Because we don’t know when we’ll hit those targets,” he said.

“We need, we absolutely need Queenslanders to go out and get vaccinated.

“We’re not yet at 80 per cent first dose and so that makes it very hard to predict when we will get to 80 per cent second dose.”

‘We’ve really got to regain our full lives again’

Lifting the state’s vaccination rate remains the main goal for the Chief Health Officer but Jeannette Young says time was running short.

“So if you haven’t had your first dose, it really is becoming too late for you,” she said.

“You need to come forward now and get that first dose of vaccine because it takes five to six weeks before you get full immunity … and we don’t know what will happen in the next five to six weeks.”

She said she would like to see more than 50,000 vaccinations a day.

“We’re in the home stretch, we’re genuinely in the home stretch,” she said.

“I just can’t see that we can keep the virus out for much longer.

“We have done so well … but it’s time for us to normalise this.

“Every time some one has a bit of a headache or a sniffle I’m saying come and get tested. We’ve really got to move on from there.

“We’ve really got to regain our full lives again. And we can only do that if we’re vaccinated.”

She said this is why the government was trying to encourage people by putting up a number of pop-up clinics in “very unusual” places.

“We wouldn’t normally be vaccinating people at Bunnings,” she said.
