Qatar’s Public Transit System to Become Fully Electric
The public transportation system in Qatar will be made completely electric thanks to the FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022 legacy.
Director of Public Relations and Communication Department at Mowasalat (Karwa) Khaled Hassan Kafud said “the mega sporting event has built a legacy for the transportation system of Qatar.”
In a conversation with Qatar TV, Kafud explained how Qatar already has an advanced public transport system that is sustainable and eco-friendly. Here, Kafud also announced that “the public transportation system of Qatar will be switched to electric completely.”
Other than electric public buses, Mowasalat will also deploy 2,500 eco-friendly buses to schools, which will have the capacity to ferry 60,000 students to and from school.
Kufad also talked about the Lusail Bus Depot, which won a Guinness World Record for the largest electric bus depot with a capacity of 478 buses. The depot is part of the Ministry of Transport’s Public Bus Infrastructure Program and aligns with Qatar’s National Environment and Climate Change Strategy (QNE) goals and helps achieve the objectives of the Qatar National Vision 2030.
Mowasalat (Karwa) deployed 900 e-buses for the World Cup, which reduced the carbon footprint of the event to the equivalent of the CO2 absorption of 18,078 trees, which also contributed to the Qatar National Vision of 2030.
