Qantas apologises after glitch causes mass privacy breach
Logging on to the Qantas app to check their flight details this morning, passengers quickly noticed something was up. What did you get? Like elbow or something? I’ll take his point. He’s got Qantas customers able to see the names of other frequent Flyers as well as their points, balance upcoming flights, and even download their boarding passes. It’s not a good feeling, but that’s the price of working through the Internet. The data visible for more than half an hour, the airline switching everyone to printed boarding passes as it scrambled to shut it down. Because you could see someone else’s boarding pass, someone else’s flight details. You can then go to the airport and check into that flight staff. Blaming a technology issue related to recent system changes. It looks like they’ve done some sort of update to their app and their systems. And there’s clearly been a failure in that process. By mid morning, Qantas insisted the issue was resolved. But this afternoon it happened again. Every time some people logged in, a different person’s private details appeared. While it’s a breach of trust, the airline says customer passport numbers, bank details and personal information such as home address and phone numbers were not shared. It also says it has no record of passengers travelling using other people’s boarding passes. It didn’t take long for scammers posing as customer service to catch on targeting those caught up in the leak on social media. The Information Commissioner has been notified.
