ghar pe kyo bethna: mohammad kaif supports bcci’s decision asking players to take part in ranji trophy
The BCCI recently issued the order for the players to take part in Ranji Trophy for their respective state teams. The board took the decision in the wake of players skipping the Ranji matches ahead of IPL 2024. Ishan Kishan, who pulled out of the Test series against South Africa, did not play any match for his state team, Jharkhand.
He missed Jharkhand’s last league stage game despite the BCCI’s order. Shreyas Iyer is also missing the quarter-final game for Mumbai. As per the NCA, Iyer is fit. Deepak Chahar is also among players who skipped the Ranji season.
Former India batsman Mohammad Kaif has supported the BCCI for asking the players to play Ranji Trophy. Kaif had a long domestic career and he continued to play for his state team despite not being part of Team India after 2006.
“If you are fully fit and you have recovered, if the doctors and physios have cleared you, to fir ghar pe kyo bethna (then why sit at home), play matches. Your state helps you when you are nothing. You play for your state, Ranji (trophy) when no one knows you. When you become an India player and make a name for yourself, when you become a hero, you don’t give your services to your state team,” Kaif told News18.
“So it’s a right call by BCCI (asking players to play Ranji Trophy). It came a bit late in my opinion. I understand (players) giving priority to IPL but it’s in March. Players are at home for two months. The BCCI’s decision has come at the right time.”
Kaif played a total of 186 first-class match from 1997 to 2017. The tally includes 13 Tests he played for Team India. He took up coaching and commentary after his retirement.
Talking of Ishan and Iyer, they will make their returns in IPL 2024. Iyer was part of the first two Tests against England. He was dropped for the last three Tests due to his below-par form with the bat.
