A case of the coronavirus variant omicron has been confirmed in Sweden.
The infected person has recently returned to Sweden from a stay in South Africa, the Public Health Authority (FHM) announced.
The positive corona test of the person was taken a little over a week ago, and the omicron variant was confirmed on Monday at 4 PM.
“It was expected that we would find the omicron variant in Sweden, as it has been discovered in several other European countries. The information we have about the variant means that we should take it very seriously until we have more knowledge,” Karin Tegmark Wisell, FHM chief, noted in a statement.
“The measures for travelers from southern Africa have been tightened since Friday, November 26, and we are following developments closely through intensified monitoring in line with the recommendations from the WHO and the ECDC,” she added.
The omicron variant was discovered in South Africa last week. It is believed that it is a more contagious variant of the coronavirus.
