Australian captain Pat Cummins gets muted response at his airport after ICC World Cup win

The Australian cricket team broke a billion hearts as it clinched the ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup 2023 after beating India in the final in Ahmedabad on Sunday.

Captain Pat Cummins joined an elite list of Australian captains to lift the World Cup, an unprecedented sixth title. However, as the 30-year-old flew home after the tremendous win, he did not receive a rousing reception as one might expect in India.

A video posted on X, formerly Twitter, by Andrew McGlashan (@andymcg_cricket), who works for ESPNcricinfo, shows a muted response to the arrival of the Australian captain at the airport. Carrying his own bags on a trolley, a few photographers are seen clicking his photos as a man shakes his hand. “Pat Cummins back on home soil as a World Cup winning captain,” says the caption of the video.

The video left netizens in India dumbfounded and they wondered if Australians even knew they had just won another World Cup.

“Probably called an Uber and went home,” a user commented. “Clark Kent vibe after saving the world!” said another. “They took world cup as a normal event, that’s why they have no any outside pressure,” wrote a third. “Are you sure the people of Australia know they’ve just won the Cricket World Cup under his captaincy lol,” another astounded netizen asked. “Can’t imagine any Indian World Cup winning cricketer pushing their baggage trolley on arrival,” another user said.

Pat Cummins had said on the eve of the match that there is “nothing more satisfying than hearing a big crowd go silent” referring to the partisan support enjoyed by Team India at the Narendra Modi Stadium.

The 30-year-old stood true to his words as the crowd went silent as India struggled to hit boundaries after the first powerplay, ending with 240 runs with Virat Kohli making 54 off 63 balls and K L Rahul scoring 66 off 107 deliveries, with only one boundary.

Australia managed to chase the modest total in 43 overs with a tremendous century by opener Travis Head (137 off 120 balls) and an unbeaten half-century by Marnus Labuschagne (58 off 110 balls).
