UPDATE: The PS5 could drop at Asda and Amazon soon. Read on for more information.
Spring is here. The birds are chirping, the sun is shining, and it’s still ridiculously hard to buy a PS5. What’s new? It has now been well over a year since its launch, yet we’re all still struggling thanks to the ongoing global semiconductor shortage sparked by the coronavirus pandemic. Sony’s Playstation 5 was released in November 2020 and it’s still a challenge to buy one today.
That said, things are certainly looking up this March after having faced a dire start to 2022 with the worst two months for drops on record in January and February. In the first few weeks alone, we’ve seen restocks from Amazon, EE, Hamleys, ShopTo, PlayStation Direct, Very, Littlewoods, AO, John Lewis & Partners (finally), Smyths Toys, Game – twice, Currys and Argos.
Our liveblog is here to get you one of Sony’s elusive next-gen consoles, as well as provide you with the details on the best games and accessories to grab alongside your new machine. If you want to find out which online retailers will be the first to restock, then keep scrolling to receive updates as they happen.

It’s the end of another day and we’re pleased to see those console bundles that landed at Currys this morning are still available. The same can’t be said for a wide range of bundles – and individual consoles, for the first time in a while – dropped by Game today. They have all sold out now, but we hope to see more again soon.
As ever, we’ll be back tomorrow to bring you the latest PS5 restocking news.
PS5 now sold out again at Game
Wednesday 16 March 2022 17:04 , Alistair Charlton
A bunch of console bundles added to Game for pre-order this morning have now sold out. We were impressed to see both the disc and digital versions of the PS5 available to buy individually, plus a wide range of bundles with new games like Gran Turismo 7 and Horizon Forbidden West. But they have now all sold out again.
Meanwhile, a handful of PS5 bundles are still available to buy at Currys, having landed on the retailer’s website this morning.

The best 4K TV for your new PS5
Wednesday 16 March 2022 15:00 , Alistair Charlton
While we wait for more PS5 restocks, it’s time to think about upgrading your television. The PS5 outputs video at 4K resolution and can even handle games running at 120 frames per second. That’s something not all TVs can manage, so if you want to see your new console running at its best, a new TV could be worthwhile.
We’ve rounded up nine of the best 4K TVs available right now, from manufacturers including Samsung, LG, Sony and Panasonic, among others. And the great news is you don’t need to spend a fortune to get a great 4K television – prices of our favourites start at under £400.

Read our review of the new iPad air 5
Wednesday 16 March 2022 14:50 , Alistair Charlton
Are you in the market for a new tablet? Then let us direct you to our review of the new iPad air 5, which is available to pre-order now ahead of its release on 18 March. Although the Apple tablet’s exterior looks the same as before, the big news here is the powerful new M1 chip inside. Our reviewer said: “In its own right, this is a spectacular iPad, with a gorgeous 10.9in display, useful new features like Centre Stage for better video calls and speedy performance.
“The iPad air’s beautiful look includes cute new colours. It offers the same versatility and intimate feel of previous iPads, has the convenience of compatibility with the second-generation Apple Pencil and the excellent magic keyboard, and boasts super-fast, responsive performance. For many people, this new iPad air will be more than powerful enough to make it the ideal choice.”

Read our review of the new Nintendo Switch OLED

If handheld gaming is more your thing then check out our review of the new Nintendo Switch OLED. The console features an OLED display for the first time, which is larger than before and produces punchier colours and deeper blacks. There’s also a redesigned kickstand and double the internal storage of its predecessor.
Our reviewer said of the £309.99 console: “The larger display is fantastic and playing games in handheld mode is an absolute joy. The kickstand feels so solid and makes us never want to look at that little toggle on the back of the original Switch ever again…this is absolutely the best version of the console yet.”

How big is the PS5?
Wednesday 16 March 2022 14:00 , Alistair Charlton
Not as strange a question as you might think, because the PS5 is massive. It’s often an easy joke to say how big the next generation of game consoles are, ever since the chunky original Xbox arrived, followed by the even bigger PS4.
But, while the Xbox series X is also rather large, it’s the PS5 that is least likely to fit under your television. The digital edition is slightly slimmer, due to not having a disc drive, but both consoles are equally tall when stood on end.
They are 390mm tall and 260mm deep, while the disc edition is 104mm thick and the digital edition is 92mm. Both consoles are intended to be stood upright, but also come with a plastic stand to help them rest on their side – likely the only way most buyers will fit the console under their TV.
Horizon Forbidden West review for the PS5
Wednesday 16 March 2022 13:30 , Alistair Charlton
Horizon Forbidden West is the follow up to 2017’s Horizon Zero Dawn and will follow hunter Aloy on her journey across the west coast of an apocalyptic United States.
We absolutely loved our time with Horizon Forbidden West. Our reviewer said: “In Horizon Forbidden West, Guerilla Games has developed its post-apocalyptic marriage of technology and nature to craft a beautifully realised vision of a world desperate for rebirth.
“The story will take new players to unexpected and breathtaking places, and fans of Horizon Zero Dawn will have plenty of their questions answered.
“While Horizon Forbidden West takes great leaps in its visual and story presentation, it stays the path with its gameplay, making small but notable additions that improve the experience.
“Not much has changed since Zero Dawn, but when that gameplay revolves around hunting mechanical dinosaurs, why would you want it to?”

How to buy an Xbox series X
Wednesday 16 March 2022 13:00 , Alistair Charlton

The Xbox series X is currently easier to buy than the PS5, but stock shortages are still fairly common for the Microsoft game console. Thankfully, the IndyBest team is on hand, with our regularly updated guide featuring all of the latest news on Xbox restocks right across the UK.
If you’re in the market for an Xbox series X, head over to our guide for your best chance of securing a console. As ever, the cheaper, smaller and less powerful Xbox series S is in stock at Game, Very, Argos and most other retailers, ready to buy right now.
Can you get a VPN on the PS5?
Wednesday 16 March 2022 12:30 , Alistair Charlton
While Sony doesn’t allow any VPN apps like NordVPN or ExpressVPN to be downloaded from the PlayStation Store (VPNs aren’t supported on the platform at all), there’s still a way to use a VPN on the PS5 if you want to stream geo-restricted content.
We’d recommend getting a VPN which has the Smart DNS feature. It’s a service provided by a number of VPN firms, including NordVPN, allowing you to spoof your location on devices that don’t have VPN support. You can read our round-up of the best VPNs for more information.
Can you play PS4 games on PS5?
Wednesday 16 March 2022 12:00 , Alistair Charlton
You sure can! The almost all of the PS4 games you already own are playable on the PS5. You’ll be able to download any games you bought through the PlayStation store on your PS4 and play them on the next-gen console.
If you’ve got the disc edition of the PS5, you’ll also be able to insert your PS4 discs into it and play them that way, too. Obviously, because there’s no physical disc slot on the digital edition of the console, you won’t be able to play any PS4 discs you own. We’ve compiled together a list of our favourite PS4 games, and most of them have dropped in price since the PS5 came out.

Can you buy a PS5 directly from Sony?
Wednesday 16 March 2022 11:40 , Alistair Charlton
Yes, but guess what? Both versions of the console are out of stock. Sony opened the virtual doors to its PlayStation Direct store in late-2021 and, according to our records, has added fresh PS5 stock on new fewer than 12 occasions through November, December and into the new year. The most recent restock happened on 8 March and before that we only saw one restock per month across January and February, so it could well be April before we see more consoles offered at PS Direct.
How much does the PS5 actually cost?
Wednesday 16 March 2022 11:20 , Alistair Charlton
Perhaps not as simple a question as it sounds. Firstly, the console is often bundled with extras like games and accessories that can see the price soar to over £700. There are also two versions of the PS5, as we explained earlier, and of course there are the scalpers – those who buy the hard-to-find console at its retail price, then try to sell it on for a substantial profit.
The PS5 digital edition is priced at £349.99, while the regular PS5, which includes a disc drive, costs £449.99. The latter is the same as the Xbox series X, while the less powerful Xbox series S (which also lacks a disc drive) undercuts the digital PS5, at £249.
Many retailers, including Game, Very, Argos, ShopTo and Ace Studio, like to sell their PS5 stock in bundles. This often means spending more but getting extras like a second controller, a selection of games and other accessories. Bundles tend to be easier to get hold of, but you’ll end up spending more money than when buying the console on its own.
Is the PS5 in stock at Smyths Toys?
Wednesday 16 March 2022 11:00 , Alistair Charlton
No, unfortunately not. The Smyths Toys website has no availability for either the PS5 disc edition or the cheaper PS5 digital edition. More stock for the former is expected before the end of March, according to the website, while the digital edition is due back at Smyths Toys at some point in 2022. Vague, we know.
Smyths sometimes has PS5 stock at its physical stores, but according to the retailer’s online stock checker, there currently aren’t any PS5 consoles available anywhere in the UK.
Can you buy a PS5 from Amazon?
Wednesday 16 March 2022 10:40 , Alistair Charlton
Technically, yes. But the only stock available through Amazon for now comes from retailers charging way over the odds. We’re talking over £700 for a console that has a retail price of £450. The good news is that Amazon itself does regularly restock the PS5 and sells it at the correct price, but as with most other retailers it’s currently out of stock.
Amazon has only had three PS5 restocks this year, with consoles landing (briefly) on 19 January, 23 February and 2 March.
The PS5 is now in stock at Game
Wednesday 16 March 2022 10:18 , Alistair Charlton
Game has just added a bunch of PS5 consoles to its website. There’s a virtual queueing system in place to help manage the crowds, and the drop includes console bundles, as well as the PS5 disc edition (£449.99, Game.co.uk) and PS5 digital edition (£359.99, Game.co.uk) on their own. Bundles include the console with Gran Turismo 7, Horizon Forbidden West, Spider-Man and more.
As usual, Game is running a pre-order system. Orders can be placed today, ahead of a release date of 25 March.
Can you buy a PS5 on the high street?
Wednesday 16 March 2022 09:45 , Alistair Charlton
Yes and no. Some shops have occasional PS5 stock available for walk-in customers to buy, but there have been very few consoles available so far this year. Your best options are Game and Smyths. The former has a Twitter account for each of its shops, used to tweet about when PS5 (and Xbox series X) stock becomes available. For your best chance of spotting a console at your local store, use this Twitter list to view every tweet from all of Game’s shops across the UK.
As for Smyths Toys, the retailer has a tool on its website for checking stock at all of its stores, We occasionally see the odd console crop up here, but for now there’s no PS5 stock anywhere in the UK.
What’s the difference between the two models of PS5?
Wednesday 16 March 2022 09:32 , Alistair Charlton
Sony sells two versions of the PS5. These are known as the disc edition and the digital edition. They have the same performance, design and technical specifications, but the digital edition does not have a disc drive. This means games can only be played by downloading them, and obviously there’s no way to play DVDs or Blu-ray movies.
The digital edition is also cheaper, at £359.99 compared to £449.99 for the disc edition.
Currys is having a PS5 restock right now
Wednesday 16 March 2022 08:58 , Alistair Charlton
Good news! Currys has just restocked with a set of PS5 console bundles. The console isn’t available on its own, unfortunately, but the bundles all look pretty good to us. They are priced from £699 to £799 and include new games like Gran Turimso 7 and Horizon Forbidden West.
Here’s a closer look at each bundle:
- PS5 disc edition with Gran Turismo 7, Logitech G435 wireless gaming headset and Logitech G29 racing wheel (£799, Currys.co.uk)
- PS5 disc edition with Gran Turismo 7, 1TB additional storage and Logitech G435 wireless headset (£699, Currys.co.uk)
- PS5 disc edition with Horizon Forbidden West, 1TB additional storage and Logitech G435 wireless headset (£699, Currys.co.uk)
- PS5 disc edition with with GT 7, Horizon Forbidden West, 1TB storage expansion and Logitech G435 headset (£759, Currys.co.uk)

As ever, stay tuned to this live blog for all of the latest PS5 restocking news as soon as we have it.
PS5 tracker, signing off
Tuesday 15 March 2022 17:29 , Jasper Pickering
That’s all from us today! This week is off to a bit of a slow start but after we saw eight retailers dropping consoles left, right and centre last week it should be expected.
We’re still hopeful that Currys could be the next major retailer to step up with PS5 stock and we will continue to keep a close eye on them for the remainder of the week.
We’ll be back first thing tomorrow to let you know about all the latest stock developments. See you then!

Tuesday 15 March 2022 16:32 , Jasper Pickering
If you are in the market for a new steering wheel as well as Gran Turismo 7, Game currently has a deal that bundles the PS5 version with the Hori Apex racing wheel. This bundle is priced at £159.99 (Game.co.uk), compared to £189.98 when buying the game and wheel separately.

PS5 vs Xbox series X
Tuesday 15 March 2022 15:24 , Jasper Pickering
Stuck on which console to choose? The Independent’s technology editor, Andrew Griffin, weighed in with his comparative review of both consoles when they were first released, and it’s well worth a read if you’re struggling to decide.
“Both consoles offer a host of improvements on their predecessors: new designs, vastly improved performance, and new games”, he said. To find out his verdict, read his review of the PS5 and Xbox series X.

Can you expand PS5 storage?
Tuesday 15 March 2022 14:27 , Jasper Pickering
PS5 gamers can expand their PlayStation 5’s internal storage with the installation of an M.2 SSD. If you’re looking to expand your PS5’s storage, then we recommend the Seagate firecuda 530, which comes with a heatsink. It costs £175 (Currys.co.uk).
“A cooling structure, like a heatsink, is something all PS5-compatible SSDs require in order to work correctly, and it’s nice that you don’t have to do a hatchet jot of installing your own with this Seagate model,” our writer said in their review. “The firecuda 530 lets you conveniently download, copy and launch PS5 and PS4 games straight from the internal storage, as well as media apps like Plex. Transfer speeds are blazing fast as well, with Seagate saying that it delivers speeds of up to 7,000MB/s.”

‘GTA 5’ PS5 version is out today

GTA V is one of the most successful media properties of all time since it first launched in 2013 and now fans can experience the most up-to-date version of the game on the PS5 and Xbox series X/S.
The re-release has a whole suite of new features, such as controller optimisation for each console, fidelity and performance modes as well as ray tracing for all that reflective goodness.
If you already own one of the many other previous versions of GTA V then you will still have to pay for the upgraded version but from now until 14 June, players can receive a special discount to experience Los Santos on next generation hardware. Find out more about the new version of GTA V in our explainer.

Could Asda restock the PS5 soon?
Tuesday 15 March 2022 10:11 , Jasper Pickering
It’s been a while since we heard of any PS5 news from Asda. They last restocked the PS5 in December just before Christmas and now it’s been nearly three months since then. Could this mean we will see a console drop sometime soon?
The retailer usually has a habit of drop at around 8am in the middle of the week, so keep an eye on restocks on their website between Tuesday and Thursday.
Make sure to have all your payment details saved ahead of time and that you’ve added the console to your wish list by clicking the small heart icon. This is good advice for any retailer but this is particularly true with Asda as sometimes people struggle to checkout from the landing page, but do manage to from the wish list section of their site.
