LIVE – Updated at 12:03
The PS5 launched in November 2020, but supply problems and a global shortage of semiconductors have slowed production of Sony’s next-generation console to a crawl. New stock is hard to find, and when it does appear the PS5 sells out fast.
August has been one of the best months ever for PS5 restocks, seeing multiple drops at Very, Smyths Toys, BT and EE, as well as restocks at Argos, Amazon and Game. There were around 35 drops in total. The question now is: will September be able to top that incredible figure?
If you’re still on the lookout for a PS5, you’ve come to the right place. Our liveblog is on hand to give you the latest insight on Playstation 5 restocks from all major UK retailers, both online and in-store, as well as providing details on rumoured releases, the latest PS5 games and accessories to snap up.

These are the best PS5 accessories

Managed to secure a PS5 at one of the many drops last week? You’ll be needing some PS5 accessories to go along with it.
The PlayStation 5 dualsense controller (£56.99, Amazon.co.uk) is an essential addition for two-player play. Our reviewer said: “Besides looking and feeling good, it also has some useful features such as haptic feedback, which is a form of far superior vibration, and a set of trigger buttons that are much more responsive and tactile than previous PlayStation controllers.”
Or, maybe you’ll want a Sony PlayStation 5 media remote (£24, Amazon.co.uk) because “consoles aren’t solely for gaming any more – they’re also highly accomplished media streaming devices,” according to our reviewer.

When is the PS5 VR headset coming?
11:10 , Alex Lee
Is there a PS VR 2 headset out right now? No. Is one coming? Absolutely! Last month, we reported that Sony had shown off the second-generation PS5 VR headset at a secret developer summit, taking us one step closer to single-corded virtual reality joy.
During the event, Sony revealed not only details about the hardware but also the way it would release games for the sequel to its PSVR headset. The details include the development of new controllers, able to tell where a user’s hands are, and how far away they are from the buttons.
You can read more about the PS5 VR headset in our article below:

Is Amazon PS5 stock going to drop today?
10:40 , Alex Lee
We hate to say it, but it’s pretty unlikely that the PS5 is still going to drop at Amazon this morning. The latest it’s ever dropped stock is at around 10:30am. This is the second week that Amazon has missed its usual restock pattern, hinting that there may be some ongoing shipment delays in the system.
📦 We’ve spotted that the small shipment issue GAME faced two weeks ago has affected other retailers also, which is why only GAME dropped last week. Seems like the rest have been impacted slightly too as there was no Amazon drop today. If it ain’t tomorrow, it’ll be next week.
— PS5 Stock UK (@PS5StockAlertUK) August 25, 2021
Amazon rarely (if ever) drops stock on a Thursday or a Friday, so we’re now looking ahead to next week for the next PS5 drop. We’ll let you know if we hear more.
An update from JD Williams on the recent PS5 drop
10:13 , Alex Lee
Last week, on Thursday afternoon, JD Williams restocked the PS5 console, and lots of you managed to snap it up. But since then, we’ve had a few of you get in touch to tell us that your orders had been cancelled without any prior notice.
Sorry, Richard. If card details were entered, your bank may hold the funds waiting for us to request them when the order is despatched. If an order is cancelled, we don’t request the payment and the bank should release the funds.
— JD Williams (@JDWFashion) August 28, 2021
@JDWFashion cancelling my@order for a ps5 no money back! No explanation! saying the bank rejected it but it’s left the account 🤷🏻♀️
— Gabby Smyth (@SmythGabby) August 28, 2021
It appears that the PS5 was listed as being in stock, despite it being sold out. As we understand it, any money which is currently being held should be released by your bank in the timeframe of your bank’s policy, as JD Williams doesn’t take any funds until an item has been dispatched.
We’ve just received an official statement from JD Williams on what went wrong:
“We are disappointed that we were unable to fulfil a number of customer’s orders [of a PS5] due to an issue with a third party affiliate incorrectly issuing a link to the sale of a limited amount of PS5 stock which we had available for customers to purchase,” a spokesperson says. “We informed customers who placed an order for a PS5 as soon as we were aware that we were unable to fulfil their order and these customers were not charged for the item.”
“We understand how disappointing this is for our customers and have implemented a number of processes internally to ensure that this does not happen again in future,” they add.
Could Argos PS5 consoles drop this week?
09:40 , Alex Lee
Argos only had one drop last month, in the early half of August, but could it restock this week? It’s one that we’re keeping our eye on for sure.
Drops used to occur in the dead of the night between 1am and 5am, and go live region by region, but the retailer has since begun dropping consoles at 8am. You might see one city go live before yours and all you can do is refresh the page. Argos’s website isn’t the most reliable, with many gamers finding more success through the Android app.
If the console does drop this week, expect it to drop at around 8am.
What is Amazon Smile?
09:25 , Alex Lee
If you’ve been following this live blog for a while now, you’ve probably seen us bang on and on and on about buying your console from Amazon Smile if you’re having issues with the main website. But what even is Amazon Smile?
It’s essentially the exact same thing as the main Amazon website, except the Amazon Foundation will donate 0.5 per cent of every purchase made through the site towards a charity of your choice. We recommend checking out via Amazon Smile if you’re having issues because it gets less traffic than the main Amazon website. A drop at Amazon could take place as late as 10am this morning.
PS5 release date
09:08 , Alex Lee
The PS5 launched in the UK on 19 November. That’s a whole 286 days ago, or 9 months and 13 days ago, or 6,864 hours ago. Let’s just say that it’s almost been a year since the PS5 first came out. But we’re all still here, struggling as we do to get ourselves Sony’s coveted console.
Things are looking up, however. Let’s hope the restock landscape will continue to improve as we move through September. Who knows… Maybe we’ll get a giant restock on the PS5’s release date. Wouldn’t that be a treat?
Could Smyths Toys PS5 stock drop this morning?
08:50 , Alex Lee
Smyths Toys last had a restock on 17 August at 8:30am. The Twitter tipsters are predicting a restock to happen this week. It’s not the easiest retailer to secure consoles from, however. The PS5 is usually available only for pick-up. Its website doesn’t always show the PS5 as being in stock for everyone either, even if someone from the same city as you has managed to buy the console.
The retailer has also begun dropping stock in-store for people to walk in and buy. Last time, Smyths sent out a tweet letting people know that there was a new batch of consoles available at their local shop, so we’d recommend following the retailer on Twitter if you aren’t already doing so.
The tweet below is from 4 August:
🚨 PS5 Update 🚨

Amazon could drop in the next hour
08:31 , Alex Lee
Amazon is one of the retailers predicted to drop stock in the next hour. It usually drops sometime between 8:30am and 9:30am. We’d prepare your bodies and do some finger press-ups if we were you. To get ready for the drop, we’d recommend signing up for a 30-day free trial of Amazon Prime if you aren’t already registered.
On 14 July, Amazon made the console exclusively available to Prime members for the first time. It has only ever been available to Prime customers ever since.
What PS5 stock drops could we see today?
08:10 , Alex Lee
Gooooooood morning PS5 hunters and helloooo September. Can you all believe that in two months’ time, the PS5 will be celebrating its one year anniversary, yet we’re all still here trying to get Sony’s console? Yeah, we can’t either.
But let’s look at the bright side. August was flush with PS5 restocks, seeing us get almost 35 drops in total. We’re hoping that September is going to be just as good. This morning, we’re eyeing up Amazon for a PlayStation 5 restock, hoping it will set us off for a bountiful month of drops. Stick around!

A good night from your PS5 stock trackers
Tuesday 31 August 2021 17:00 , Alex Lee
And we’ve come to the end of a disappointing final day of the month for PS5 restocks. But let’s not forget that August has, on the whole, been jam-packed with drops, seeing us get almost 35 restocks in total. AO.com was the only retailer not to have a restock this month, but let’s not dwell on the negatives.
We saw so many of you successfully bag the console in August,. Our hope now is that the month of September will smash August’s 35 drops and deliver the PS5s you all so rightly deserve. We’ll be back here tomorrow to bring you all the latest restock updates as they happen. We’ll be keeping a keen eye on Amazon. See you then!
We love the new PS5 controller
Tuesday 31 August 2021 16:30 , Alex Lee
In light of there being absolutely zero drops today, we’re just going to take the time to gush about Sony’s dualsense controller. It’s arguably our favourite thing about the next-gen console. When you get your hands on the machine, you’ll already find one controller in the box, but to play with others, you really need another one.
“Besides looking and feeling good, it also has some useful features such as haptic feedback, which is a form of far superior vibration, and a set of trigger buttons that are much more responsive and tactile than previous PlayStation controllers,” our writer said in our round-up of the best PS5 accessories. “It’s the natural next step for a PlayStation controller and it’s arguably the best thing about the console. A second one is an essential addition for everyone but the most antisocial player.”
The company recently released some new colourways, and we’re big fans of the cosmic red version.

Game PS5 stock could drop next week
Tuesday 31 August 2021 15:30 , Alex Lee
As we saw Game do in the final week of July, the retailer has once again updated its PS5 bundles page with new release dates of 17 September. Release date doesn’t actually mean drop date in Game’s case.
When Game says “release date”, it’s referring to the date that the PS5 will drop on your doorstep.
Game typically has a drop a week and a half before the stated release date, so expect a drop sometime between 8 and 9 September. The retailer has a massive list of bundles, so feel free to peruse them all when you’ve got the chance.
‘Fifa 22’ PS5 release date
Tuesday 31 August 2021 14:50 , Alex Lee
While we wait for the PS5 to drop today, did you know that Fifa 22 on PS5 is releasing very soon? Last month, EA announced that Fifa 22 will be released on 1 October, later this year. Fifa 22 integrates something called HyperMotion technology into the game, which basically combines match capture and machine learning to provide an ultra-realistic Fifa experience.
If you pre-ordered the ultimate edition of the game before 11 August, you’ll be receiving an untradeable FUT Heroes player, giving you early birds a head-start on making a solid team.
We’ve got a round-up of all the new features and gameplay in our Fifa 22 explainer, which you can read below:
Fifa 22 now has a release date: Find out when it’s all kicking off

Could John Lewis PS5 stock drop today?
Tuesday 31 August 2021 13:10 , Alex Lee
Asda and John Lewis & Partners are usually like two peas in a pod. Like tweedle dum and tweedle dee. Like Paul and Barry from the Chuckle Brothers. They usually follow the same restock pattern. Except, Asda last week broke that pattern when it dropped the console and John Lewis & Partners didn’t.
So could John Lewis & Partners restock today? Probably not, looking at the time. John Lewis & Partners usually drops stock at 7am in the morning, so we’d recommend getting up a little early either tomorrow or on Thursday morning to have a peek at its website. More updates to follow.
Need an Xbox series X?
Tuesday 31 August 2021 12:20 , Alex Lee
It’s been an awfully quiet morning for PS5 restocks. Maybe the bank holiday has thrown all the retailers through a loop. Looking at the time, we’re now most likely going to get an Amazon drop tomorrow instead of today.
We’re not the only ones having a quiet day today, though. The folks over at the Xbox series X restock live blog haven’t had any drops today either. That said, things have been picking up pace with the announcement of the limited edition Halo Infinite Xbox series X – which is weirdly less “limited” than, well, the standard series X. You can follow our live updates below:

News on the JD Williams PS5 restock
Tuesday 31 August 2021 11:30 , Alex Lee
On Thursday afternoon, JD Williams dropped stock of the PS5 onto its website. A Thursday miracle, perhaps, but now it seems like several customers are getting their orders cancelled without any notice, and some are still waiting for a refund.
We’ve contacted JD Williams now and will update you when we hear more. According to a customer service representative, the digital edition console was in stock, but due to a system error, customers were still able to place orders despite the PS5 selling out in a short few minutes.
You didn’t even tell me my order was cancelled I had to go into my account to see the transaction had cancelled just got on live chat to find out it’s not coming after all ffs
— BLESSED 2 GAME (@BLESSED2GAME) August 28, 2021
Very limited stock?!!!
Even though my order went through within a few minutes of your stock live mines still been cancelled?!
Did you even have any at all??!
— Julie Hardcastle (@JulieHardy7) August 28, 2021
Exactly and now they put my money as credit on the account. Rather then back to my card don’t trust this company at a all

PS Plus September 2021 games may have been leaked
Tuesday 31 August 2021 11:00 , Alex Lee
The games coming to PS Plus in September may have just been leaked by a user on the French forum Dealabs. If correct, this could be the best month of PS Plus PS4 games and PS5 games we’ve seen since June. Unlike the lacklustre games in August, the Dealabs leaker suggests we could be getting co-op kitchen puzzler Overcooked: All You Can Eat on PS5, as well as multiplayer shooter Predator: Hunting Grounds and stealth assassination game Hitman 2 on PS4.
Of course, until we hear it from Sony’s own mouth hole, these are all still rumours, but we should be getting some confirmation tomorrow. An exciting lineup if true, though.
Can you play PS4 games on PS5?
Tuesday 31 August 2021 10:35 , Alex Lee
You sure can! The overwhelming majority of the PS4 games are playable on the PS5. You’ll be able to download any games you bought through the PlayStation store on your PS4 and play them on the PS5. If you’ve got the PS5 disc edition console, you’ll also be able to insert your PS4 discs into the PS5 and play them that way.
Obviously, because there’s no physical disc slot on the digital edition of the PS5, you won’t be able to play your PS4 discs on it, so bear that in mind when making your decision.

When was the last Currys PC World PS5 drop?
Tuesday 31 August 2021 10:04 , Alex Lee
Last week, Currys PC World uploaded a mysterious banner onto its PS5 landing page. The banner said that the PS5 would be available at select Currys PC World stores. There were around 80 on the list. You can check out the full list of retailers here.
While some stores told customers that it knew nothing about the restock, others were successfully able to bag themselves a console at their local shop. We’re still knocking exasperatedly on Currys’ door, trying to get some answers.
@1AlexL my husband just tried the thurrock store for the ps5 and they had no clue no delivery of the ps5 coming in at all. Thurrock is on the list of stores where it should be available. Can you investigate
— zoe kingshott (@zoebilly) August 26, 2021
Was no code it said on the Currys website at the top of the page grab a disc edition ps5 in store today which was 2 days ago went in pre paid and they added my name to the list got a call about 5pm the next day and went and picked the console up pic.twitter.com/OsLLsHw2Dx

The new, lighter PS5 is worse than the one at launch
Tuesday 31 August 2021 09:08 , Alex Lee
Now that the newer, lighter PS5 is being distributed and falling into the hands of eager gamers around the world, we’re starting to receive teardowns of the console. And it looks like the older version is very slightly better than the newer one.
According to YouTuber Austin Evans, the heat sink is smaller, meaning your PS5 will run hotter when it gets going. Rumours suggest that the change has been made to help alleviate Sony’s production issues. This new heat sink may be easier to acquire than the previous version, for example, or it could be cheaper – helping the company cut costs.
When could AO PS5 stock drop?
Tuesday 31 August 2021 08:52 , Alex Lee
We’re on the final day of the month and AO.com has still yet to drop its haul of consoles. It’s now the only major retailer yet to drop stock in August, so we’re waiting and hoping that today could finally be the day.
AO last had a restock on 28 July, but stock was only available for 10 minutes. It’s not a retailer you should be relying on, if we’re honest. The process to getting a console is arduous – with people having to amend the website’s code using the Google Chrome element inspector, just to get it into their basket.
AO doesn’t seem to have huge quantities of stock available when there is a drop, so the PS5s tend to get snapped up quickly. We’ll let you know as soon as it drops the console. Expect it sometime between 10am and 1pm.
Amazon PS5 consoles could drop this morning
Tuesday 31 August 2021 08:37 , Alex Lee
We’re going to go through all the rumoured drops before the stock starts rolling in. Amazon is one of the retailers rumoured to drop stock this morning and the avalanche of consoles could arrive anytime now. We do have a few tips for securing stock from the retailer.
The first one isn’t really a tip, more a necessity. You *need* to be a Prime subscriber to buy a PS5 from the online retailer. If you aren’t one, we’d suggest signing up for a 30-day free trial. On 14 July, Amazon made the console exclusively available to Prime members for the first time. It has only ever been available to Prime customers ever since.
Here are some other handy tips:
- Make sure to use Amazon Smile – a separate website that gives a portion of the cost of your purchase toward a chosen charity of your choice. Amazon Smile gets a lot less traffic than the regular Amazon website, so if there are issues, Smile should work better
- Add the console to your wish list and then add it to your basket. We’ve found more success checking out this way
What PS5 stock drops could we see today?
Tuesday 31 August 2021 08:21 , Alex Lee
Good morning PS5 hunters! We’re back. Back and ready to help get you a new shiny PlayStation 5. We didn’t get any drops over the bank holiday weekend, but we could get three drops today to round off the spectacular month.
