La Corte Suprema de Estados Unidos revocó el viernes las protecciones constitucionales para el aborto que estuvieron vigentes durante casi 50 años, en una decisión de su mayoría conservadora que anuló el caso Roe vs. Wade. Se espera que el paso conduzca a la prohibición del aborto en aproximadamente la mitad de los estados de la Unión Americana.
Ahora los proveedores y algunos jefes policiales temen lo que sucederá próximamente. Se preparan para un aumento de la violencia una vez conocido el fallo de la Corte Suprema, ya que históricamente siempre ha habido un pico cuando el tema del aborto suscita atención generalizada, por ejemplo, cuando un estado aprueba nuevas restricciones.
Anticipan que las protestas, acoso y otros actos de violencia se intensificarán en los estados donde el aborto siga siendo legal.
“Sabemos por experiencia que la gente que protesta frente a las clínicas en los estados que prohíben no empacan sus cosas y se van”, dijo Melissa Fowler, jefa de programas para la Federación Nacional por el Aborto.
El grupo y los cientos de clínicas que representa están en “alta alerta” desde que se filtró el borrador, dijo Fowler. El personal especializado en seguridad de la organización está de guardia las 24 horas. Van a las clínicas a realizar zafarranchos con escenarios como amenazas de bomba o agresores armados y les indican dónde colocar las cámaras de seguridad, También asesoran a médicos en sus hogares, monitorean las amenazas en línea y mantienen contacto con la policía local.
En algunos lugares, la policía local trabaja con las clínicas para tratar de reducir la posibilidad de violencia con agentes de guardia y otras medidas disuasivas, pero la relación entre las clínicas y la policía no siempre es positiva y una fuerte presencia policial puede asustar a las pacientes, dijo Fowler. Según Kifferly, las relaciones entre las clínicas y la policía varía según la ciudad y el estado.
