Prosecution of Huawei leader off job due to US justice deal Financial

The deal is a so-called agreement for deferred prosecution, an alternative to trial. A public prosecutor then agrees not to prosecute if the accused agrees to meet certain requirements. The government has effectively brought charges against a suspect, but does nothing about it. The deal ends December 1, 2022 and will then have a term of four years.

Earlier on Friday, a similar deal appeared to be imminent based on filings filed by the Department in a federal court in Brooklyn, New York. The case was filed Friday. Meng said he was not guilty in court.

Meng was arrested in Canada in 2018. The United States accused her of lying about trade contacts with an Iranian company, which is subject to US sanctions. For example, she would have misled the bank HSBC about this.

Meng had to remain in the Canadian city of Vancouver pending extradition to the US. US prosecutors now allow Meng to return to her home country of China, according to business newspaper The Wall Street Journal.

Meng’s arrest put a lot of pressure on relations between China on the one hand and the US and Canada on the other. Shortly after the arrest, China detained two Canadians. One of them, Michael Spavor, was sentenced in August to 11 years in prison for espionage.

The Huawei company would not be part of the deal between Wanzhou and the judiciary and continues to fight the allegations against the group, insiders told Reuters news agency. Both Huawei and the US Department of Justice have not yet responded to the case, writes The Wall Street Journal.
