IKEA to shut Mumbai’s R City Mall store by mid 2024
MUMBAI: Swedish home furnishing retailer Ikea is shutting its R-City mall store located in Mumbai’s Ghatkopar within two years of its launch. The outlet which was launched in July 2022 as one of the new-format small stores will cease its operations by mid-this year, Ikea India said on Thursday. “As these are new concepts, there have been a lot of learnings in terms of attracting customers and how they experience our stores and products. In the R City store, we have not been able to provide customers the full Ikea experience due to limitation of the layout, design and location,” the company said.
The firm, however, remains invested in the market and plans to expand its omni-channel strategy besides exploring new locations for setting up various format stores. Ikea runs two more stores in Mumbai currently and also fulfils online deliveries. The company said it will “further develop the existing Ikea Navi Mumbai site into a retail destination and explore opportunities to expand our physical presence in Pune.” Ikea said that it will attempt to retain all its over 100 employees working at the R City mall store and place them in other roles within the company. A spokesperson said that its upcoming stores in North India will create room to deploy some of the staff in those outlets. “All Ikea co-workers will be offered equal opportunities for their next assignments in Mumbai and our other units, ensuring their seamless transition,” the company said.
Ikea is slated to open its Gurgaon store next year. In a recent interview, India CEO and chief sustainability officer Susanne Pulverer said the company is planning to cut prices of its products in India amid softening inputs costs.
