The industry is evolving for the best: Hansika

In her two-decade-long career, Hansika has established herself as a popular face across languages. In a chat with us, the actress reflects on her initial works and also talks about her interesting line up of films. She also opens up about the role of hers that people like the most, being a part of successful film franchises, and more…

On her most loved roleI’ve been fortunate to get some good roles, even at the beginning of my career, in Tamil. One of my films that people have liked is Romeo Juliet. That film was the underdog, because, at that time, I had many films lined up and I just wanted to do a fresh romcom. Even to this day, people constantly tell me about how much they love Romeo Juliet.

You’ve been working in films for two decades. Is there a visible change you’ve noticed, especially when it comes to women? There are amazing scripts that are being made and written for female actors now. Female-centric films are happening. It’s pan-India now instead of Bollywood or Tollywood. There’s such great work happening. The industry is evolving and it’s evolving for the best. There’s so much scope for work. It’s the best time for actors to explore and have fun with scripts because there are so many good scripts out there. Now, there’s an audience for every kind of script.

All your recent films have been completely different from one another. Was that a deliberate decision?Well, yes. My recent films have been different from one another. At the beginning of my career, I did so many films and I was fortunate to get some great scripts. But I wanted to do more performance-oriented films and it gives me immense satisfaction and pleasure when producers offer me a female-oriented film. I have worked so hard and now people are ready to see me carry a movie on my shoulder. So, I intentionally wanted to do different kinds of films and I wanted to do more films where there’s more scope for performance and where I can show my acting ability. I’m happy with the graph of my career, the films that I’m currently doing, and the films that are being offered to me now.

How was the experience of doing a docuseries like Love Shaadi Drama comparable to working on a full-length film?Love Shaadi Drama show was a reality. Here, the cameras are a fly on the wall and you don’t know what’s happening. You’re just truthful and your emotions are all over the place. It’s about capturing everything because it’s a reality show. Movies are completely different. You’re playing a particular character, so you’re in that zone, as there’s a story and a narrative. So they’re completely different.

On being a part of mega-successful film franchisesIt feels great to be a part of big successful films like Aranmanai and Singam. I learned a lot and I got to work with some great actors in these films. It feels really good.

On her latest projects for this yearThis year is going to be exciting. 2024 started for me with 105 Minutes. It was an experimental thriller that was different from all the films that I’ve shot. We had to do 20 days of rehearsal for 105 Minutes because it’s a single-shot and single-character film. On the other hand, Man is a film that’s very close to me. It’s a hard-hitting thriller that I enjoyed working on. Meanwhile, Guardian is a horror thriller with a unique script. I’m happy that I’m working with Vijay Chandar, who had directed me in Vaalu, again.
