Bleeding can be part of an ulcerative colitis flare and inflammation. You may have to change your medications. Some anti-inflammatory medications ulcerative colitis can help stop bleeding. It is important to treat the loss of blood also. If you have developed anemia from blood loss, it has to be corrected with iron, folic acid, or vitamin B12, after evaluation. In severe cases of blood loss, a blood transfusion might be required. If there is severe bleeding, called hemorrhaging, there may be need of surgery to remove the colon and create an ileostomy, which is a rare complication.
