Prince Joachim of Denmark is the latest royal to move stateside, joining Prince Harry across the pond. It is one of a number of similarities the princes, who are friends, share. Family differences were a catalyst in their moves and they have both served in the military: Harry rose to Captain in the British Army while Joachim held the rank of commander in a tank squadron of the Danish Army.
Prince Joachim will join Prince Harry as a royal in exile in the US
The Danish prince and his wife, Princess Marie, are moving to Washington DC this summer as Joachim, 53, starts a new job at the Danish Embassy.
Harry, 38, moved to the West Coast celebrity enclave of Montecito, California with wife Meghan Markle in 2020. They live there with son Archie, three, and daughter Lilibet, one.
Joachim and Marie will be joined by 13-year-old son Henrik and daughter Athena, 11.
The move is significant as it comes after Queen Margrethe II’s bombshell announcement stripping Joachim’s four children of their prince and princess titles.
It made headlines around the world and Joachim, also similarly to Harry, appeared in a televised interview criticising the royal decision.

Queen Margrethe II announced she was stripping Joachim’s four children of their titles
Harry and Meghan have appeared in a series of high-profile interviews, often criticising aspects of the British Royal Family.
It is no secret that their own difficulties with the dynamic of royal life pushed them into the big US move.
How well Harry and Joachim know each other?
The pair of prince’s have long been friendly.
In 2017, when Harry visited Copenhagen, he was often flanked by Joachim while he visit a number of programmes for fellow veterans.
Harry, 38, spent a decade in the military and was stationed in Afghanistan twice.
Joachim, 56, enlisted as a recruit in the Queen’s Life Regiment in 1987 and has remained a member of the Danish military to this day.
He will take up a new job at the Danish Embassy under the Ministry of Defense on September 1.

What decision did Queen Margrethe make?
In early 2023, Joachim’s children became known as His/Her Excellency Count of Monpezat instead of His/Her Highness after being stripped of their titles.
Joachim discussed frustrations with his family on Danish outlet BT, describing how he was given just five days’ notice about the news.
“Whether you modernize or slim down, it must be done in a proper way,” he said.
“It’s about children. Orderliness and children. It is a very heavy matter.”
