Priest under fire after calling for controversial drugs to be used for COVID-19

A NSW Catholic priest has come under fire over a video where he called for the use of controversial drugs to treat COVID-19.

Father Andrew Grace, who is a priest at the Sacred Heart Parish in Griffith, posted a video on the church’s Facebook page imploring the NSW Government to “provide vaccines that have no association with abortion”.

Father Grace appeared to plead for the Australian Government to turn to other drugs such as ivermectin and hydroxychloroquine, which are not medically approved to treat COVID-19, to help stop the spread of the virus.

“I implore the government also and plead with them to look at other methods to stem the spread of COVID, mainly through early intervention, through a drug called ‘I’ which I won’t say on this platform, and also another drug starting with ‘H’ that was used by the President of the United States last year and he had a very quick recovery from COVID,” he said.

The priest has removed the video following community backlash and direction from Wagga Wagga Bishop Mark Edwards.

“I have instructed Father Grace to remove references to medical treatments that are not approved by the Australian authorities,” the bishop told 2GB’s Ben Fordham Live in a statement.

Speaking to 2GB today, Catholic Social Services Chair Francis Sullivan described the video as “bizarre”.

“Priests particularly will argue that they are providing an essential service, therefore the obligations and responsibilities on them to get vaccinated are even higher than for ordinary people,” he said.

“It’s up to the priest to step up and demonstrate … that to be vaccinated is an act of love, to get vaccinated is about everybody’s good, not your own personal preference.”

Mr Sullivan said agreed the video being taken down was the right decision.

“It’s just common sense you can’t firstly, expect parishioners to come to mass when you the priest, are not vaccinated,” he said.

“Secondly, there’s no point sending mixed messages at a time when there’s still communities in NSW that are still struggling to get access to the vaccine, there are still communities where there is vaccine hesitancy.

“The rest of the community has gone through too much for too long to have this nonsense holding things back.”
