Alex de Minaur has advanced to the Australian Open second round The 24-year-old had to battle hard against Milos Raonic Raonic was forced to retire during the third set
Milos Raonic had Alex de Minaur on the backfoot during the early goings of their first round match at the Australian Open.
But the veteran’s body was unable to maintain the pace to push the Aussie hero all the way as he was forced to retire from the first major of the year.
After taking the first set during a thrilling tie-break, Raonic was unable to weather the De Minaur response as the 24-year-old battled back to level proceedings.
Then, during the third set, Raonic’s movement appeared visibly restricted and the big Canadian was unable to continue, with the Rod Laver Arena crowd shocked when he made his way to the net to shake his rival’s hand.
It means De Minaur, who beat Carlos Alcaraz and Novak Djokovic in the build up to the tournament, advances to the second round.
More to follow.
Having competed under visible duress for much of the contest, @milosraonic has had to retire.
Not how @alexdeminaur would’ve wanted to advance, but he does so 6-7(6) 6-2 2-0.#AusOpen • #AO2024 pic.twitter.com/J7Evaoffo6
