Assam Congress MLAs back BJP govt but say won’t quit party
GUWAHATI: Congress in Assam received a jolt, weeks after Rahul Gandhi’s yatra in the state, as two of its MLAs – PCC working president Kamalakhya Dey Purkayastha and former minister Basanta Das – extended support Wednesday to BJP-led govt without quitting their party. Earlier, two other Congress MLAs – Siddeque Ahmed and Sashikanta Das – were suspended for supporting Assam’s BJP-led govt.
Both Purkayastha, who quit as working president, and Das said they decided to support Himanta Biswa Sarma’s govt to usher in development to their constituencies, Karimganj North and Mangaldoi respectively. “This is my gift to Rahul Gandhi,” Sarma said mocking the Congress functionary.
Purkayastha said, “I will support govt but will continue to be a Congress worker.”
