not krunal pandya! lucknow super giants confirm 28-year-old star nicholas pooran as new vice-captain for ipl 2024
Just minutes before the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) confirmed that KL Rahul is still injured and will miss the fifth Test against England, Lucknow Super Giants’ revealed his deputy for the 2024 Indian Premier League (IPL) with doubts over his participation in the upcoming season.
For those unaware, Rahul had missed the second half of the 2023 season after injuring himself in a game against Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) that forced him to undergo surgery and also not be able to participate in the World Test Championship (WTC) final or India’s tour of the West Indies.
LSG Announce New Vice-Captain
In Rahul’s absence, Krunal Pandya captained the team in the second half of the tournament and the playoffs. However, LSG has made a change heading into the 2024 season and revealed a new vice captain. Former West captain Nicholas Pooran will be Rahul’s deputy this time around and will lead the team if the regular skipper fails to recover fitness in time for the cash-rich league.

Pooran joined LSG ahead of the 2023 season for a whopping Rs. 16 crore. He made a big mark with the bat for the Lucknow-based franchise with a spectacular season that saw him make 358 runs in 15 matches at an average of 29.83 and an incredible strike rate of 172.95.
Pooran has proven his credentials as a captain in T20 cricket over the last year. The 28-year-old was the captain of the MI New York and MI Emirates as they lifted the 2023 Major League Cricket and 2024 ILT20 titles.
Talking about Rahul, he has missed the last four Test matches of the India-England series due to a quadriceps issue. The BCCI revealed that he has now also been ruled out of the Dharamshala Test match set to start on March 7 and is in London to consult specialists.
