Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk pleads with Queenslanders to 'hop on the lifeboat' as state nudges 58pc fully vaccinated

Queensland has recorded no new local cases of COVID-19 and one new overseas acquired case in hotel quarantine as the state nudges almost 58 per cent fully vaccinated.

Just over 72 per cent of eligible Queenslanders have received their first dose and 57.45 per cent are fully vaccinated.

Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk was in Maryborough as part of the government’s regional vaccination push.

“Once again I’m urging every one to get vaccinated,” she said.

“We really need to keep lifting these vaccination rates.”

The Premier said the state would be in the “best position to weather this storm if we are fully vaccinated.”

“I can’t look after you if you won’t hop on the lifeboat,” she said.

“We have 11 days to go to get everyone vaccinated.”

Indigenous communities ‘profoundly disappointed’ by lack of consultation on borders

There were 9,805 tests conducted in the past 24 hours and 15,825 vaccines administered by Queensland Health.

Asked when the government would release its second roadmap around restrictions for unvaccinated Queenslanders, Ms Palaszczuk said they would be talking to business over the coming weeks.

“But the priority at the moment is to get vaccinated,” she said.

The Queensland Aboriginal and Islander Health Council (QAIHC) yesterday released a statement, calling for an urgent meeting with the Premier, voicing “profound disappointment and concern that there had been no consultation with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people before the [re-opening] announcement was made”.

When asked today, Ms Palaszczuk said “that’s actually not correct”.

“I spoke with all of the mayors after we made the announcement and I have ministers across the length and breadth of Queensland today,” she said.

“A lot of them are in Indigenous communities and I say to our First Nations people, we want you to come forward and get vaccinated and over the coming days we will have announcements to make it easier for you to get vaccinated.”

Isolation still necessary

Chief Health Officer Jeannette Young said going forward, authorities would still need to isolate people who test positive to COVID-19.

“There’ll be nothing different there,” she said.

“Except if they’re fully vaccinated, we know that they’ll get much milder disease so they’ll probably be able to do that at home rather than in one of our hospitals.

“We’ll assess the home, we’ll assess the other people in that home and what the risks are, and they’ll probably be able to be managed in one of our virtual wards to make sure that they’re okay.

“Everyone else in that home will be a primary contact and they’ll have to quarantine for 14 days.”

Green flights from New Zealand

Dr Young announced Queensland would also be allowing green flights from the south island of New Zealand again.

“If any of you have relatives there, they will be able to travel without quarantining as they have got an outbreak in Auckland that’s been going for quite a while now, but there has been no transmission to the south island,” she said.

“It doesn’t work the other way though … so don’t think that if you live here you can go to the south island.”
