Pregnant Kim Polling wants to continue with judo career

Pregnant Kim Polling wants to continue with judo career

Polling missed the last Summer Games in Tokyo after a lost competition with Sanne van Dijke, who won Olympic bronze. She emphasizes in a long message on Instagram that she certainly does not want to end her judo career. In 2024 she wants to participate in the Games in Paris.

“I always thought that becoming a mother would automatically mean the end of my judo career. At the same time, I dreamed and was convinced that I would at least be a mother before my thirtieth birthday. So when I celebrated my thirtieth birthday last February, I found myself starting to think that I was too old to wait any longer before becoming a mother, but too young to retire from top sport. I also still like judo too much and there is still too much potential in me to stop,” writes Polling.

The solution came from her friend Andrea. “He came up with the fairly simple question: why couldn’t it be both? If there’s anyone who can come back after a while out, it was me, he thought. He had no doubts. But, I asked, how do we do that with my training sessions, the tournaments and the training internships? Andrea’s answer: Am I there? And don’t other mothers still work? You’re not a bad mother because you can’t be with your child 24/7.”

Polling hopes to start ‘if all goes well’ at the end of 2022 in the qualification process for the 2024 Olympic Games in Paris

Sailor Marit Bouwmeester and athlete Nadine Broersen also recently announced that they were pregnant, but that they certainly did not want to say goodbye to their top sport career.
