Kalki 2898 AD, the dystopian mythological science-fiction film starring Prabhas, will be released on June 27. Directed by Nag Ashwin, the film was earlier slated for a May 9 release. A new poster was also unveiled alongside the date announcement, revealing fresh looks at the Mahabharata-inspired characters played by Prabhas, Deepika Padukone and Amitabh Bachchan.
The poster shows Prabhas in the centre, flanked by Deepika and Amitabh’s characters. While Deepika looks like she’s going to play some sort of warrior in the movie, Amitabh was recently revealed to be playing the mentor-figure Ashwatthama. He dons a long beard and even longer robes in the poster, which also teases a desolate post-apocalyptic landscape. A teaser, which was unveiled at last year’s San Diego Comic Con event, drew comparisons to Denis Villeneuve’s Dune movies with its desert setting and costumes.
Kalki 2898 AD is touted as India’s most expensive film, with a reported price tag of over Rs 600 crore. There’s a lot riding on its success, with the film eyeing a global launch akin to RRR in 2022. Prabhas is coming off Salaar: Part 1 – Ceasefire, his first real hit in over six years. Directed by Prashanth Neel, the movie grossed over Rs 700 crore worldwide, which marked a welcome return to form for the lead star, after a series of critical and commercial misfires.
Amitabh, on the other hand, last played a similar mentor-figure role in the big-budget fantasy film Brahmastra. Deepika was last seen in Fighter, and before that, in the two Shah Rukh Khan-led blockbusters Pathaan and Jawan. Kalki 2898 AD also stars Disha Patani and Kamal Haasan. Kalki 2898 AD will be released in multiple Indian languages.
