The SF epic dune received ten nominations. Then follow musical remake West Side Story and the coming of age drama Belfast, with seven nominations each.
The Power of the Dog set in the early twentieth century USA, it tells the story of a domineering rancher who intimidates his brother, his wife and her teenage son. However, he appears to be doing this to ignore his own deeper feelings. dune from director Denis Villeneuve tells of a brilliant young man who must travel to the most dangerous planet in the universe to secure the future of his family and people.
dune makes more chances in the technical categories. A striking title among the nominations is the well-watched but controversial climate satire Don’t Look Up, starring Leonardo DiCaprio. The wry comedy has a chance to win four statuettes, including that for best film of the year.
The presentation of the most important film awards in the world is on March 27. The Dutch entry for best foreign film, Do Not Hesitatealready dropped out in the preliminaries.
Bond hit No Time To Die
The James Bond movie No Time To Die has a chance to win three Oscars. British secret agent 007’s 25th adventure has been nominated in three categories: best song, best sound and best special effects. The nominations were announced in Hollywood on Tuesday afternoon. It is also not a record for a 007 film. Specter from 2012 was nominated for no fewer than five Oscars.
In No Time To Die Daniel Craig can be seen as 007 for the fifth and final time. In the film, Bond takes on a maniac who threatens the world with a virus. The cast also includes Rami Malek, Léa Seydoux and Lashana Lynch.
The film was originally planned for the end of 2019, but was postponed several times due to production problems and then the corona pandemic. No Time To Die drew full houses all over the world last fall. The film is still in cinemas and can also be seen on Apple TV and Pathé Thuis since this week.
Danish animation Flee sets record
The Danish animation film Flee delivered a remarkable performance on Tuesday. The film was nominated for the Oscars in three separate categories: best animation, best documentary and best foreign film. As far as we know, that has never happened before in the history of the Oscars.
The film by director Jonas Poher Rasmussen has already won quite a few prizes at major festivals such as Cannes, Sundance and IDFA last year. Rasmussen tells the story of his friend Amin. The gay man fled war-torn Afghanistan 35 years ago as a teenager and ended up in Denmark. In the film, Amin is about to get married and decides to deal with all his demons.
In the animation category you must Flee compete against the Disney hit encanto† In the category of best foreign film is Flee one of the favorites together with the Norwegian tragicomedy The Worst Person in the World† Flee can be seen in Dutch cinemas from 3 March.
