England and Mumbai Indians medium pacer Issy Wong has revealed how she planned Smriti Mandhana’s dismissal during their match against the Royal Challengers Bangalore. On Sunday, cheered by a packed house at the M Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru, Mandhana was expected to go big. But she grew impatient and looked to smash pacer Wong out of the park.

Mandhana scored just nine runs off 11 deliveries with one boundary before the English medium-pacer accounted for her wicket. Wong came from round the wicket and she went for a lofted drive.

But Mandhana got a top edge and stand-in captain Nat Sciver-Brunt took a simple catch. Wong said that she took advice from her seniors, but listened to her gut.

“The plan was to try coming around the wicket and swing it into her. But there was a little wobble in the plan. I said to Shab (Shabnim Ismail) and she was like ‘oooh’. And then Harman (Harmanpreet Kaur) came in and said, ‘Oooh, I would not do that,” Wong told Charlotte Edwards in an interview.

“And I looked at them and thought what did they know. I took their opinion and did what my gut feeling told me. I am glad it paid off in the end,” Wong added.

Wong enjoyed playing in front of an energetic crowd in Bengaluru as Mumbai raced to the top of the table after beating Mandhana’s Bangalore by seven wickets.

“It was epic. It felt like everyone cares about the game that I do. And it’s nice to be out there and this means absolutely everything to me. With 30,000 people watching, it’s very special. I don’t think you get that in many places,” Wong said.

It was a similar case with some other Bangalore top-order batters such as Richa Ghosh and S Meghana who tried to break the shackles by force, not the best approach when the bowlers are on top.

MI next face the Delhi Capitals on March 5 in New Delhi.
