Popular Spanish holiday destinations could end up underwater- ‘Destructive'

Asia's Tech News Daily

The volcano on La Palma erupted in September and has destroyed hundreds of homes and caused thousands of residents to be evacuated. The Canary Islands are situated above the African Plate which caused the islands’ active volcanoes.

The beautiful islands were formed millions of years ago when the African Plate’s movement moved over an underwater hotspot.

The hotspot injected magma, forming the oldest islands of Fuerteventura and Lanzarote 20 million years ago.

La Palma is one of the youngest Canary Islands, forming just under two million years ago.

Now volcano experts have revealed that the underwater hotspot could cause the islands of Fuerteventura and Lanzarote to sink.

As the oldest two Canary Islands, each island is slowly eroding and will eventually be submerged underwater due to the activity.

Juan Carlos Carracedo, a 79 year old geologist, told El País: “The volcanic eruption of La Palma is undoubtedly the most destructive one in Spain’s history.

“In the hotspot, the temperature of the magma is about 200 degrees higher, which makes it more buoyant.

“It’s the same as when you push a ball to the bottom of a pool and it shoots to the surface.

“This is the process that has created all the Canary Islands and is still going on.

“New islands will certainly emerge, always to the west, but we will not see any of them, because it will happen in millions of years.”

Under the same process, Fuerteventura and Lanzarote are gradually disappearing below the water.

As new islands are formed, Spain could expand its borders across further marine territory, according to experts.

The Canary Islands are extremely popular with British tourists and many head there each year to enjoy a holiday.

Fuerteventura is the second largest of the Canary Islands and is known for stunning white sand beaches and year-round good weather.

Fuerteventura is popular with water sports fans, especially surfing, windsurfing and waterskiing.

Tourists can explore the volcano island’s sheltered coves or take beautiful cliffside walks to admire the views.

Lanzarote’s volcano landscapes offer tourists incredible areas to explore with great views of the sea.

The island’s beaches enjoy year-round sunshine and idyllic coastal towns with whitewashed houses are the perfect place to stay.

Boutique hotels are also popular on the island with many different options for British tourists looking for luxury.

Any British tourists currently on the island of La Palma are advised to follow the advice of local authorities to stay out of danger.
