It comes as Bank Holiday travellers faced rail and road delays on Saturday as forecasters could only promise a ‘mixed weather picture’ for revellers hoping to enjoy the early May break.

Rail passengers were hit by delays to services ahead of a crippling combination of rail strikes and engineering works that is set to cause chaos over an eight-day period.

Network Rail began carrying out 487 planned projects on Saturday which are expected to last into Monday.

Track renewals around Coventry saw no trains running between Birmingham Airport and Rugby/Leamington Spa, while work on the new station at Cambridge South saw disruption on routes around the city.

The most significant disruption came yesterday when no trains will run between London Euston and Milton Keynes, or between Glasgow and England.

Meanwhile, Britain’s beleaguered rail passengers reacted with fury yesterday as large parts of the country were left with no train services because of a fresh strike by drivers.

Aslef members – paid a median salary of £60,000 – walked out at five operators on Sunday morning in the long-running pay dispute, mounting picket lines outside stations.

Passengers have been told not to attempt to travel – while a ban on overtime at 16 companies continues until today, which will cause further disruption.
