Aldi customers are celebrating after the supermarket announced the long awaited return of its garlic bread crisps.

The much loved budget retailer revealed that the snacks, which merge the best of two popular foods, are ‘back by popular demand’.

The Specially Selected Garlic Bread Crinkle Cut Crisps, priced at £1.09, first went on sale last summer, but have returned to stores this week.

‘Packed full of flavour, shoppers will be hit with the delicious taste of smoky garlic, whilst experiencing the hearty crunch of Aldi’s premium Specially Selected crinkle cut style crisp,’ the retailer wrote on their website.

You’ll have to be quick though, because despite shoppers’ pleads, the crisps are not a permanent fixture on Aldi shelves.

They’re actually one of Aldi’s Specialbuy products, meaning ‘once they’re gone, they’re gone’, according to the retailer.

News of the popular product’s return has already caused a stir on social media.

On the Aldi UK Shoppers Facebook group, an enthusiastic shopper wrote: ‘Glad to see these bad boys back…. they are very moorish.’

‘These are the best crisps we’ve had for year(s) so tasty,’ added another.

One shopper begged for the snack to stick around: ‘Spotted them in my local Aldi yesterday – bought a stash of them!!! They should definitely be a permanent fixture!!’

The love continued in the Food Finds UK Official group. ‘They were lush,’ shared user, Steve Crowe. And Louise Evans added: ‘GET IN MY BELLY’.

Although others weren’t convinced that the combo was as tempting. ‘Feel this is a step too far,’ Jessie Reed said in the comments. ‘What on Earth?,’ asked Olivia Lenherr.

If the garlic bread flavour doesn’t take your fancy, Aldi Specialbuy crisps also come in Pizza Margherita and ‘Ndjua Spiced flavours (both are also priced £1.09).

The surprising origin of Aldi’s name

People are only just starting to find out how Aldi got its name.

The Albrecht family started what would become Aldi back in 1946. Back then, the store was named Albrecht, and when their mother Anna retired, brothers Theo and Karl Albrecht took over the west German store.

But how did it go from Albrecht to Aldi? Well, the Aldi name comes from the first two letters from the family’s surname, and the German word for discount (Diskont).

From 1962 onwards, the brand was officially called Albrecht-Diskont, which was then shortened Aldi.

Aldi’s new launch comes as its competitors attempt to give them a run for their money when it comes to low pricy.

We all know about Tesco’s Aldi price match and now Morrisons will also be price matching Aldi and Lidl on hundreds of everyday items.

From Monday February 19, the prices of more than 200 items will be slashed, and those that are price matched will be labelled in store.
