Politicians agree on one thing: farmers are also victims of the nitrogen crisis

The astonished, the angry and the sorrowful. Every Member of Parliament reacts in his own way to the news of NRC that hundreds of farmers received permission from provinces to increase their livestock and that this probably led to additional damage to nature. “Hundreds of farmers,” says Laura Bromet (GroenLinks), “in the middle of the nitrogen crisis?” A confirmation of agricultural policy that has failed for years, says Leonie Vestering (Party for the Animals). And the legal ‘vulnerabilities’ need to be investigated very carefully”, says Tjeerd de Groot (D66).

Actually, it was already a bit known. In recent years, studies have shown that the equipment used in farmers’ stables to reduce nitrogen emissions paints an overly positive picture. And the RIVM calculation model that farmers use to demonstrate that emissions are not increasing – a condition for growth – is also critical.

When granting permits, too much reliance is placed on devices such as air scrubbers and manure stables and the RIVM calculation model. In Friesland, Limburg and Gelderland, a total of about 350 farmers were allowed to expand.

Farmers can only increase their livestock if the number of animals on a farm elsewhere in the country is reduced. But to prevent Natura 2000 areas from being expanded nearby, according to Vestering, a circle should be drawn around nature reserves “within which no animals are allowed.” Caroline van der Plas (BoerBurgerBeweging), who, according to research by I&O Research and De Volkskrant, CDA as a party for farmers has now more than caught up, believes that farmers should also be able to expand close to nature reserves, provided nitrogen emissions do not increase. “A farmer who calculates that does not do it on the back of a beer mat.” The four MPs agree on one thing: not only nature, but also the farmers are victims. Farmers want clarity, says De Groot.

Bromet and Vestering say they will ask the minister questions. Vestering: “You can discuss whether the livestock should be reduced, but the most basic thing you can do is not let farmers expand with the help of technological gimmicks.”
