Detectives scouring landfill in Melbourne’s north in the desperate search for missing woman Ju “Kelly” Zhang say they have discovered human remains.

The grim discovery on Friday afternoon comes after officers zeroed-in on the Wollert landfill on Tuesday.

The remains are yet to be formally identified.

The location was transformed into a crime scene and is currently being examined by major crime detectives, Crime Command assistant commissioner Bob Hill said.

“Our members have worked under very difficult and trying conditions to ensure that every avenue of inquiry has been exhausted so we could provide answers to Ju’s family and friends,” he said.

“We know this has been an incredibly difficult and traumatic time for them. We hope that this will bring the closure they need and Ju can finally be laid to rest.”

There had been no trace of Ms Zhang since she suspiciously disappeared in early February.

The woman’s boyfriend, Joon Seong Tan, was charged with one count of murder after he was arrested at Melbourne Airport that same month.

On February 12, the 35-year-old appeared in court, where it was revealed detectives were trawling through 3500 hours of CCTV footage in relation to the case.

The Doncaster man remains in custody and is expected to next face Melbourne Magistrates Court in July.

Searches for Ms Zhang’s body were conducted earlier this year in bushland along the Darebin Creek in the Heidelberg West and Alphington areas.

The mother-of-one was last seen alive at her home in Winchester Ave, Epping about 5.30pm on February 1.

Detective Inspector Andrew Stamper said in February it was the “firm belief” of police that Ms Zhang was murdered that night, but they didn’t know where she was.

Police haven’t revealed what led them to search the Wollert tip.

When asked, Inspector Stamper said their “very prolonged investigation” had led them there.

He described it as a “highly complex search in a highly difficult environment”.

“There’s been a massive commitment to find Ju and get the answers for her family – that’s our number one priority,” Inspector Stamper said on Tuesday.
