Police check on workshops modifying motorcycles for racing

GEORGE TOWN: Penang police today conducted simultaneous checks at 21 motorcycle workshops believed to be carrying out modifications for racing purposes.

Nine of the checks were conducted in workshops in the Northeast district here while the remaining were in the Southwest and Seberang Prai Selatan districts.

Northeast police chief Assistant Commissioner Soffian Santong, who led checks on two workshops in Tanjung Bungah, said they found several offences committed by both premises.

He said both workshops were operating without a valid licence by the Penang Island City Council (MBPP) as well as carrying out modifications for the purpose of legal and illegal racing.

“At the first workshop, we found that it had a dyno lab. The dyno tune is where you make adjustments to your motorcycle’s key aspects.

“With these adjustments, your bike will perform at top notch, achieving highest horse power levels and will showcase some serious torque all while maintaining optimal air fuel ratio.

“As for the second workshop, it is operating in a private residence. There we found many motorcycle frames. We will be conducting further checks to determine whether they are stolen or otherwise.

“We will continue to check all motorcycle workshops statewide to slam the brakes on illegal racing activities,” he said when met after the operation here this afternoon.

The operation was also jointly conducted by the MBPP, the Road Transport Department and the Domestic Trade and Consumer Affairs Ministry.

Soffian said police also brought back three motorcycles seized from the second workshop, which have been modified.

“We also conducted random drug tests on workers of the workshops,” he added.

Today’s operation was a follow up to a July 17 incident where five men were killed and two others injured in a crash along the Tun Dr Lim Chong Eu Expressway.

Police believed the bikers in the accident were illegally racing, had lost control and crashed.

Early last month, Transport Ministry secretary-general Datuk Isham Ishak had said that Section 42 of the Road Transport Act 1987 would be amended to impose heavier penalties against those involved in illegal racing activities.

He had said that the heavier penalties would see the minimum fine raised from RM300 to a more effective amount, possibly between RM5,000 and RM10,000, as well as a jail sentence for the offender.

He had also said that the amendments would also enable action to be taken against workshops modifying motorcycles used by mat rempit.
