In Japan, these initial Game Boy games were Pokémon Red and Green, based on the color of Charmander and Bulbasaur. However, the American releases substituted Green for Blue, based on the Pokémon Squirtle. A third game set in the Kanto-based title, Pokémon Yellow Version: Special Pikachu Edition, was released in 1998 in Japan and 1999 in America. Unlike the previous games, Pokémon Yellow drew heavily from the anime TV series, such as having Pikachu tag along outside his Poké Ball like the Pikachu owned by Ash Ketchum in the anime.
Some of the Pokémon anime series is available to stream on Netflix, including the new mainline series Pokémon Horizons: The Series and the stop-motion spinoff Pokémon Concierge. Pokémon Legends: Z-A, a sequel to Pokémon Legends: Arceus, will be available on the Nintendo Switch in 2025. The manga based on Pokémon Scarlet and Violet is ongoing but currently on hiatus.
