PML-N and PPP strike deal to form government in Pakistan; Shehbaz Sharif set to become PM

NEW DELHI: After days of negotiations, the Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) and Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) have come to an agreement to establish a new coalition government in Pakistan.

PPP chairman Bilawal Bhutto-Zardari declared that PML-N President Shehbaz Sharif is set to reassume the role of Prime Minister, while PPP co-chairman Asif Zardari is slated to become the next President of the country.

The announcement was made by party leaders in a joint news conference late on Tuesday night.

Bhutto-Zardari said, “The PPP and PML-N have achieved the required number, and [now] we are in a position to form the government,” Geo news reported.

This coalition agreement comes after former Prime Minister Imran Khan’s Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) party-backed candidates and the Sunni Ittehad Council (SIC) failed to secure a simple majority in the elections.

Addressing the media, Shehbaz Sharif expressed gratitude towards the leadership of both parties for reaching a positive conclusion to the talks. He emphasized the unity between the two parties and their ability to form the government.

The decision follows inconclusive talks on Monday, where both sides struggled to reach a consensus on power-sharing arrangements following a fractured verdict in the February 8 election.

The PML-N secured 75 seats, PPP came third with 54 seats, and the Muttahida Qaumi Movement Pakistan (MQM-P) has agreed to support them with their 17 seats. With this coalition, they aim to navigate the challenges ahead collectively.
