Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s photograph has been removed from the new version of COVID-19 vaccine certificates issued by the Union Health Ministry. According to reports and claims by several social media users, the new certificates have been issued with the tagline – ‘Together, India will defeat COVID-19’. However, these certificates do not have the photograph of PM Modi on them, even though the quote is attributed to PM Narendra Modi.

According to reports, the removal of PM Narendra Modi’s photograph is in line with the Model Code of Conduct (MCC), and in accordance with the directives of the Election Commission of India (ECI). According to reports, PM Modi’s photograph was removed in poll-bound states such as Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Punjab, Manipur and Goa.

Several social media users took note of the change and posted photographs of the new certificates without PM Narendra Modi’s photographs. “Modi ji no more visible on Covid Vaccine certificates. Just downloaded to check – yes, his pic is gone,” Sandeep Manudhane, a social media user, said in a post on X. Several users pointed out that the change was because of the MCC implementation.
The development comes at a time when AstraZeneca admitted that its COVID-19 vaccine – which was marketed as Covishield in India – may lead to side effects. In a statement, the UK pharma giant said that its ‘sympathy goes out to anyone who has lost loved ones’. In India, AstraZeneca had partnered with Serum Institute of India the largest vaccine maker in the world to supply vaccines to the Indian government.
