New Delhi: Congress leader Rahul Gandhi has written a letter to Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah, voicing his concerns regarding the purported sexual violence case involving the incumbent Member of Parliament from Hassan Prajwal Revanna. The correspondence from the Wayanad MP to the Karnataka CM follows reports implicating Prajwal Revanna, a sitting MP from JD(S), which is an ally of the BJP in the current Lok Sabha elections, in allegations of sexually assaulting and filming hundreds of women over an extended period.
Rahul Gandhi, in his letter, slammed the senior leadership of the BJP, including Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Home Minister Amit Shah for campaigning for a “mass rapist”.
“What is even more shocking is that despite these gruesome allegations being brought to the notice of the senior-most BJP leadership, the Prime Minister campaigned and canvassed for a mass rapist,” Rahul wrote in his letter.
The Congress leader also accused the Modi government of wilfully allowing Revanna to flee India to derail any meaningful investigation.
“The union government wilfully allowed him to flee India to derail any meaningful investigation. The deeply perverse nature of these crimes and the absolute impunity enjoyed by Prajwal Revanna with the blessings of the Prime Minister and Home Minister deserve the strongest condemnation,” he wrote.
“In my two decades in public life, I have never come across a senior public representative who has constantly chosen silence in the face of untold violence against women. From our wrestlers in Haryana to our sisters in Manipur, Indian women are bearing the brunt of the Prime Minister’s tacit support for such criminals,” the letter further read.
Rahul Gandhi also urged the Karnataka CM to extend all possible support to the victims. Notably, the Karnataka government has constituted a Special Investigation Team (SIT) to investigate the grave allegations, and a request has been made to the Prime Minister to cancel Prajwal Revanna’s diplomatic passport and get him extradited to India at the earliest.
What Is The Case All About?
A week prior to the second phase of elections, when 14 seats in Karnataka were set to go to polls, a series of disturbing pictures and videos surfaced on social media. Among them were images of video calls featuring naked women, with an individual resembling Prajwal Revanna visible on the other end. The videos, mostly filmed from a first-person perspective, alleged Revanna’s involvement in filming these explicit acts.
Numerous women were depicted engaging in sexual activities, purportedly at Revanna’s direction. While this scandal caught the attention of many politicians, little discussion surrounded the issue until after the Hassan constituency voted on April 26th. Shortly after, Prajwal Revanna departed for Germany on a “personal tour.”
The situation intensified when the state women’s commission urged the government to investigate the circulating videos thoroughly. Responding to this plea, the state government formed a special investigative team to probe the matter. Subsequently, an alleged victim filed a police complaint, which the SIT promptly took up. The complainant accused HD Revanna and his son of sexual exploitation.
