Cop duo held for allegedly extorting another traveller

JOHOR BARU: The two policemen who were arrested earlier this month for extorting a traveller at the Bangunan Sultan Iskandar (BSI) Customs, Immigration and Quarantine complex have been detained again for allegedly committing another act of extortion.

Johor Baru Selatan deputy police chief Supt Lim Jit Huey said the arrests were made on Friday following a report lodged by the victim, who claimed to have been extorted of RM1,000 by two police personnel at BSI earlier this year.

“Police arrested two suspects, aged 33 and 34, on the same day at 5.30pm after the report was lodged.

“The suspects are the same individuals who have been arrested before for a similar case,” he said here yesterday.

Supt Lim added that both suspects, who are under remand until tomorrow, tested negative for drugs.

“Johor police is committed to fighting integrity problems and criminal misconduct among its officers and personnel in order to increase public confidence in the force,” he said.

Supt Lim also said that those with information regarding the case should immediately contact the Johor Baru Selatan police hotline at 07-218 2323.

A 50-year-old Malaysian, who wanted to be known only as Ng, claimed that two policemen had accused him of having pornographic materials in his phone while he was travelling through BSI on Jan 4.

He alleged that the policemen told him to pay them RM1,000 to settle the case before taking him to an ATM to withdraw the money.

Earlier this month, the two policemen were arrested for trying to extort RM2,000 from a local man at BSI.

They were released on police bail on April 9, after the end of the remand period.

The two of them continued to serve as police personnel as they had not received their suspension letters but were no longer on duty at BSI, said Supt Lim.
